Webinar: erosion effects on phosphorus levels

     An Iowa Learning Farms webinar on Wednesday, April 20 at noon will cover phosphorus contributions attributed to streambank erosion.

     Keith Schilling, state geologist and director of the Iowa Geological Survey, will direct the webinar. Schilling conducts research on water-related issues in Iowa that include groundwater flow and quality, surface and groundwater interaction, nonpoint source pollution, and watershed and flood plain processes.

     Registration is open for the 2022 Crop Scouting Competition for Iowa Youth, presented by the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Integrated Pest Management program and Iowa 4-H Youth Development.

     The 12th annual event will be held on July 28 at the Field Extension Education Laboratory, 1928 240th St., Boone.

Conservation Farmer nominations sought

     Now in its 70th year, this prestigious honor has been awarded to celebrate conservation progress and Iowa farmers who are committed to exceptional environmental stewardship and conservation efforts.

   The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) encourages producers and landowners to enroll in the Grassland Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), which runs through May 13.

     In order to help producers and custom operators examine the market, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach publishes the Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey.

     Soil temperature is one of the most important factors crop farmers use to guide their planting decisions. The rule of thumb is to wait until the upper 4 inches reach at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit, with a warming trend in the forecast.

Learn to control weeds, invasive species at workshop

     A noxious weeds and invasive plants identification workshop will be Wednesday, April 20, 6-8 p.m. at the Jones County Nature Center.

     Learn to identify and control difficult noxious weeds and invasive species found in Eastern Iowa. This workshop will cover problem plants found in a range of habitats including backyards, forests, fields, shorelines and parks.

     Find out about the methods and tools used by noxious weed control specialists to effectively control these challenging weeds.

Prairie Hill

     The March meeting of the Prairie Hill 4-H Club was held on Monday, March 21, 2022 at the Youth Development Center.

     The meeting was called to order at 6:15 p.m. by Taylor Gassman, President. The Pledge to the American Flag was led by Harper Russell. The roll call question of “Where would you like to go on vacation?” was answered by 29 members. Four visitors were present.

Studies show how no-till can save farmers money

     No-till is a great way to reduce the use of diesel fuel and to use nutrients, especially nitrogen, more efficiently.

     We know input costs for farming are increasing, fertilizer, pesticide, and diesel fuel prices are all increasing. Even if corn prices are up, it’s still hard to offset the rise of inputs. Any way to reduce even one of these inputs could help put more money in a producer’s pocket.
