Spot market apply deadline is extended

     Hog producers who sold hogs through a spot market sale during the COVID-19 pandemic now have until April 15 to submit their applications for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program (SMHPP).

     SMHPP, which is part of USDA’s Pandemic Assistance for Producers initiative, originally had a deadline to submit applications by Feb. 25, 2022.

Women in Ag Conference is planned

     Setting the Table for Success” is the theme for this year’s Women in Agriculture Conference, to be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Washington on March 26.

     The event is being hosted by the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Washington County office, along with the Washington County Women in Agriculture Advisory Board.

     The goal of this year’s conference is to show women of all ages how they can set their table for success in agriculture by surrounding themselves with the right people and resources to make informed decisions.

Deadline to apply for DMC is extended

     The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has extended the deadline to enroll in Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) and Supplemental Dairy Margin Coverage (SDMC) for program year 2022. The deadline to apply for 2022 coverage is now March 25, 2022. As part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s ongoing efforts to support dairy farmers and rural communities, USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) opened DMC and SDMC signup in December 2021 to help producers manage economic risk brought on by milk price and feed cost disparities.

March 15 is ARC, PLC enrollment deadline

     Agricultural producers who have not yet enrolled in the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) or Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs for the 2022 crop year have until March 15 to sign a contract.

     The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers these two safety net programs to provide vital income support to farmers experiencing substantial declines in crop prices or revenues.

Search begins for state's best burger

     Iowa’s beef producers are asking their fellow Iowans to help find Iowa’s Best Burger in 2022. In this year’s quest, the Iowa Beef Industry Council (IBIC) and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) are encouraging you to nominate your favorite burger, whether it’s gourmet or down-home style.

Awards highlight MV chapter's year

     Maquoketa Valley FFA has had a tremendous and exciting year this year. The chapter is led by the 2021-2022 officer team which consists of President, Lane Domeyer; Vice President, Courtney Goedken; Secretary, Dannie Burkle; Treasurer, Haley Ronnebaum; Reporter, Alia Domeyer; and Sentinel, Lucas Orcutt.

     Our competitive season started in September with District Soil Evaluation, where 7 members competed in the Northeast District to be the top soil evaluator. Two teams from Maquoketa Valley participated in the event.

Midland chapter's year filled with growth, success

     Midland FFA currently has 96 members for the 2021-2022 school year. With the introduction of eighth-grade members, our numbers and involvement have increased exponentially.

     We came into the school year on a high after three teams were named state champions this spring and summer; Ag Biotechnology, Ag Issues, and Agronomy. This was a very exciting time as Ag Issues and Agronomy are also contests held at the national level.
