James Leroy Walker, 78, of Anamosa, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, May 18, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, surrounded by his loving family.

 Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Anamosa. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, and again at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to the time of service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Anamosa.

     The school year is winding down. I can imagine the anticipation the students (and teachers and staff) have as the countdown begins.

     I remember my attitude as the school year came to a close; I couldn’t wait for summer to start. I am sure the kids are quite antsy right now.

Disloyal action taken against Heartbeat Bill

To the Editor,

     I am thankful that the Heartbeat Bill (SF 359) passed and want to thank the representatives, Governor, and all who made this bill possible. Summed up, the bill states that a person shall not knowingly acquire, provide, receive, otherwise transfer, or use a fetal (unborn baby) body part in this state. Also, a doctor may not perform an abortion once the baby’s heartbeat is detected. (Exceptions are addressed under specific circumstances.)

Congressman Blum stands by his word

To the Editor,

     The Primary Elections are coming up on June 5 and early voting has already begun. This is the first step that we voters can take in our governmental process to select those people whom we would like to have represent our interests at the local, state and federal levels.

     The First District of Iowa, the congressional district where we live, is currently represented by Congressman Rod Blum. He is running for re-election.

Zirkelbach, county supervisors make best decisions for taxpayers

To the Editor,

     We believe that we are fortunate to have the five sitting members on the Jones County Board of Supervisors.

     We believe that Jon Zirkelbach has many of the attributes that we all need in our elected officials. Those would include a positive attitude and being open minded. Jon Stays abreast of what is going on throughout the whole county because he feels that is important.

     We feel that Jon is one of those people that are willing to listen to every person regardless of viewpoint.

Memorial Day is time for personal reflection, remembrance

     The first Memorial Day observances were spontaneous expressions of gratitude and remembrance from Civil War veterans for their fallen friends, organized by veterans groups in local communities. It was recognized as an official holiday after it became an honored tradition, one that remains today. Memorial Day is a time for families and communities to gather together in remembrance of those who gave their lives for our country.

The many mother figures in our lives

     There are different definitions of “mother,” especially in society today.

     We all have various forms of moms in our lives… Birth moms, step-moms, adoptive moms, mother-like figures, aunts, grandmothers/great grandmothers, mothers-in-law, older sisters, older female cousins, older good friends… The list goes on and on.

     These moms have all had some level of influence on our lives in more ways than one.

Zirkelbach serves all citizens of Jones County

To the Editor,

     I have served on the Jones County Conservation Board for over 25 years and have had the privilege of working with many very fine and dedicated supervisors. During the past several years, I have had the good fortune to work under Supervisor Jon Zirkelbach. He has been very supportive; however, support for the county’s conservation programs is only one of the many facets of their responsibilities.

     Serving all areas of Jones County and every aspect of our county’s needs, he is a truly dedicated, conscientious, and hardworking public servant.

To the Editor,

     The Primary Elections are coming soon and I urge everyone to exercise their right to vote and participate in the election process.

     Jon Zirkelbach is on the ballot for re-election as the Jones County Supervisor and deserves your vote. Jon is completing his first four-year term as a supervisor and has performed in an exemplary manner. He is extremely conscientious and caring and has consistently placed the needs of the residents of Jones County over and above his own.
