To the Editor,

     I do not understand why Fred Hubbell had to stoop so low and say that Governor Kim Reynolds is cutting funding for mental health care. He should know that’s not true.

     Here’s what is: 150,000 more Iowans are receiving mental health care since 2014. Also, Mental Health America has ranked Iowa’s system 7th in the nation. That being said, 7th is not best and that’s why we have to do even more.

     Saturday, Nov. 25 is Shop Small Saturday. This is a day dedicated to supporting your small hometown businesses after hitting up the big box stores on Black Friday.

     Monticello is incredibly lucky to have such a variety of small-town businesses, from clothing stores for men, women and children of all ages; jewelry; gift items; sporting goods; active wear; home décor; furniture; and more. Which toys made the Hall of Fame?

     The holidays always bring out the kid in me!

     As a kid, I enjoyed playing with toys: Legos, Barbie’s, Lincoln Logs, even playing pretend kitchen and dress up.

     Earlier this month, several classic toys were inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. (Who knew there was such a thing?) Out of 12 finalists, the top three chosen to enter the Hall of Fame included:

     • Paper Airplane

     • The Wiffle Ball

     • The board game Clue

     As the weather begins to change and we’ll most likely be seeing some snow within the next month, now is a good time to think about winter safety and preventing falls. Common sense tells us to avoid ice- and snow-covered walkways, to stay indoors if possible during wintery weather, and to slow down and be cautious. But, when considering fall prevention, it turns out the clear majority of senior falls happen indoors.

Taking a stand for wellness

     Though tobacco use rates continue to decline, with 15.1 percent of adults being classified as smokers nationwide, its health implications remain a very real cause for concern. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds cigarette smoking to be the number one cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, linking it to 1 out of every 5 deaths. With figures like this, it’s hard to overstate the health consequences of tobacco use.

To the Editor,

     PBS (Public Broadcasting System) had a program featuring the importance of the sights, sounds, and smells of water.

     In 1980, a gentleman by the name of Mr. Jim Gibbs purchased 292 acres of land specifically because of its access to water (the land had multiple springs on it). Since then, Mr. Gibbs has devoted his life to developing this tract of land into beautiful gardens for the WORLD to see.

To the Editor,

     Nikki Rushford, director of the Wyoming Public Library, has seen the impact of the Jones County Community Foundation’s (JCCF) grant-marking program firsthand. Grants in the past have supported building improvements and an online checkout system for patrons. Since 2012, more than $549,000 has supported non-profits like the Wyoming Public Library through the Foundation’s annual grant making program and endowments payouts from agency and donor advised funds.

Lions thank JRMC educators for insight

To the Editor,

     The Monticello Lions Club and Jones Regional Medical Center held their first diabetes education evening on Nov. 9. The session was attended by 15 people. Julie Guthrie and Marilyn McCall from JRMC did a great job explaining the causes of Type 2 diabetes and how we can work towards preventing or delaying its onset. Julie and Marilyn told us facts that completely changed how we think about our diets, and both emphasized how important education is for people diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes.

United Church organ concert a success

To the Editor,

     The Congregation and the pastors of The United Church of Monticello wish to extend their thanks to the members of the Monticello community (and beyond) who attended our Organ Concert on Sunday, Nov. 5th – a “full house,” no less! The sterling program offered by Pastor Paul Finger on our Barckhoff Pipe Organ not only afforded an afternoon of accomplished keyboard artistry (as well as an education on the capabilities of this magnificent instrument), but also allowed for the raising of $1,100 towards its preservation and upkeep.
