To the Editor,

     Way to go Mark Spensley. Maybe those people that don’t honor this flag should leave this great country and make room for people that will honor this flag.

     Thank God for the men and women that fought and died so I can be free and proudly salute this flag.

     My name is Peter Bungum, and I’m a 76-year-old retired teacher from Anamosa. I’ve been married to my wife, Ruth Ann, for 57 years. I’m 100 percent Norwegian, born and raised in southeast Minnesota. I graduated from Luther College, I’m a Christian, left-handed, used to have red hair, and am a Cubs fans and a Hawkeye fan.

Standards Referenced Reporting, Iowa 21st Century Employability Skills

     Monticello School has increased the number of teachers participating in the district’s Standards Referenced Reporting Pilot from last school year. The district has 64 percent of teaching staff engaged in the pilot, which is close to a 40 percent increase from last school year.

     With an increase in the number of pilot teachers, many students and parents new to the classrooms engaged in standards referenced reporting will see a change in how class participation, work completion, behavior, and the ability to work with peers and adults is reported.

History seen within pioneer cemeteries

     I came across an article recently from the Chicago Tribune about the fact that pioneer cemeteries in the State of Illinois are quickly disappearing.

     The crumbling and toppling headstones in many of Illinois’ unknown and untouched pioneer cemeteries are more than anyone group of people can handle. Couple that with tall wild grass and natural Illinois prairie, and the tombstones that remain intact are hardly seen.

Lions’ blood drive proves to be a success

To the Editor,

     The Monticello Lions Club thanks the citizens of the Monticello community for supporting the American Red Cross blood drive held on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

     A total of 72 units of blood were collected by the Red Cross.

     Thank you to the Monticello Fareway for donating juice, Monticello Rotary for the use of their street signs, the churches, businesses, factories, and the Monticello Express for helping the Lions promote the blood drive. It was a successful day.

So much going on at once

     People ask me all the time what I enjoy about my job. Well, there are many things, but the obvious is that there is always something to keep me busy; always something going on in the community and county.

     This weekend was a perfect example…

     Friday evening I took a few photos at the Stone Bridge Dinner and Gala, held at the Monticello Eagles Club. They had quite the turnout, many unique and fun items on the live auction, dinner catered by the always-delicious Darrell’s, and homemade items on the live auction.

To the Editor,

     For the past 11 years, the core volunteer leadership team for the Monticello Thanksgiving Community Dinner (TCD) has been the same. In addition to Terry and myself, Dale and Gracie Zimmerman and Dennis and Jeannie McCall have all worked together to organize this yearly community event. Terry and I are the newbies with only 11 years of service, while Dennis and Jeannie have at least 14 years and Dale and Gracie have at least 16 years.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease

     Many of us worry when we forget someone’s name, can’t come up with a word or can’t find the car keys, that we are developing Alzheimer’s. We might joke that our “dementia is kicking in.” Alzheimer’s Disease is more than being somewhat forgetful at times. It is a form of dementia that causes significant problems with memory, thinking, behavior, and interferes with our daily life.

Lions Club encourages blood donation, Sept. 19

To the Editor and Monticello community,

     The Monticello Lions Club is sponsoring a Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Monticello Berndes Center, located at the Jones County Fairgrounds.

     To make an appointment to donate, please call 1-800-733-2767 or visit redcrossblood.org. Walk-in donors are always welcome.

     The Red Cross collects and distributes about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply. On any given day, 44,000 pints of blood may be required to meet the needs of patients across the United States.
