Fence at Bowens Prairie poses a problem

To the Editor,

     I must apologize for putting a wooden rail or fence along the highway side of the Bowens Prairie Cemetery.

     I failed to get the county put on the historical site list partly because of the wooden fence. I’ll remove it.

     I also want to thank Brad Geerdes and his wife for continuing to put up the U.S. flags along the highway on our holidays. I still have people tell me, “The flags are up today at Bowens Prairie.” It’s a pleasant thing to hear.

To the Editor,

     The Iowa State Fair’s evolution from a simple stock show to today’s agricultural, industrial and entertainment extravaganza is a direct reflection of Iowa’s evolution from a untilled prairie to the very center of the nation’s food production. The Iowa State Fair has been the historical trademark of this progress and we are humbled to serve on the governing board.

Midland superintendent steps down

     The construction progress at Midland continues in spite of the challenges posed by the weather. The wrestling practice/safe room area will be completed soon and the Industrial Arts shop will be completed by the end of January. Once the shop area is complete we will move the current shop into the new area so that the demolition work in the old shop can begin in order to make room for a new band room.

Reporter paints odd image of Monticello

     Last week, Monticello residents and those who live elsewhere but grew up in this great town shared an article that was written by a reporter for The New York Times. The article spread like wild fire all over Facebook. The Express received a few calls and e-mails regarding the article as well.

     The reporter was in town for a story on how voters are still supporting President-elect Donald Trump despite the weekly (almost daily) controversies he seems to find himself caught up in. (Maybe he should stay off Twitter for a while…)

     There have been a lot of distortions and misunderstandings regarding my Election Integrity proposal. My job is to make it easy to vote, but hard to cheat. That’s what this proposal accomplishes.

     The Election Integrity Act is not a photo ID mandate. Registered voters who do not already have an Iowa driver’s license or state-issued ID will be provided with a free voter ID card in the mail, automatically. It does not require a picture, additional documentation, or travelling to the DMV to obtain.

     Monday, Jan. 9, marked the start of the 87th General Assembly at the Iowa Statehouse. I am honored to represent the people of Jackson, Jones, and Dubuque counties.

News from Dist. 96

     This was a busy first week back in Des Moines that was filled with speeches and new introductions. I am humbled that Iowans from House District 96 have once again re-elected me to serve as their Representative. This session we have 15 new representatives and eight new senators.

     It is my privilege to once again serve the people of District 48 as your State Senator. I appreciate your confidence in me to share your voice, concerns and thoughts at the Statehouse.

     The 87th General Session is a new era in our state’s government with Republican leadership in the Senate, the House and the Governor’s Office. This is the first time in 20 years in which the Republican Party has control of all three branches of Iowa government.

New congressional session begins in D.C.

     As I begin my second term as your Representative in Congress I want to take this opportunity to review the progress we made the last two years as well as discuss some of the opportunities we have in the upcoming session.

     First and foremost I want to THANK YOU for sending me back to Congress. I’m honored and humbled to represent the great folks of eastern Iowa in our nation’s capital.
