     Kelly Diane Milner, Madison, Wis., was found guilty of failure to use child restraint device. She was fined $100 plus court costs.

     Blayne Michel Walker, Anamosa, pleaded guilty to failure to use headlamps when required. He was fined $30 plus court costs.

     Terrell Lavonte Cole, Oxford Junction, pleaded not guilty to assault. A non-jury trial is set for March 1. Cole also pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct-fighting or violent behavior. No trial date is set.

Feb. 6

     9:06 a.m. – Police assisted the EMS at 211 W. First St.

     11:40 a.m. – Police provided a public assist on the 600 block of S. Cedar St.

     12:45 p.m. – Police responded to a traffic-related call at Bus. Highway 151 and S. Cedar St.

     3:26 p.m. – Police responded to an accident on the 300 block of S. Main St.

Sheriff's Report

     A one-vehicle accident took place on Feb. 4 approximately between 2 and 3 a.m. on County Road E-45. Caleb Hunter Bickel, 18, of Anamosa, was driving a 2003 Ford F250 when the right side of the tires veered off the road. The truck pulled toward the left, crossing the centerline. Bickel entered the ditch, hit the embankment, causing the truck to spin 180 degrees before coming to a stop. Bickel sustained minor injuries, and was checked out by Olin EMS.

Substance abuse impacts heart health

     With Valentine’s Day in sight, it’s not unusual to see a lot of red in February, often in conjunction with heart designs. This is especially fitting as, in addition to hosting the Valentine’s Day holiday, February is also designated as American Heart Month. This month is a time to learn about and appreciate the tremendous impact the heart has on one’s overall health, as well as the lifestyle factors that can either promote a healthy heart or risk complications. As heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, the importance of hearth health can’t be overstated.

School funding bill is rushed through Senate

     Last week, the main focus was on State Supplemental Aid for schools. The Republicans used an unusual tactic.

     On Monday afternoon, Jan. 30, Senate Republicans introduced Senate File 166, which would increase school funding by 1.11 percent for the 2017-18 school year. That is half of the proposed increase by the Branstad-Reynolds Administration.

News from Dist. 96

     Monday night, Jan. 30, we addressed the FY16 budget shortfall. There was a large amount of debate and we had to make tough choices. However, we made K-12 education funding a priority and left it off the cutting block. I am confident that the decisions we made uphold our state’s budget in a strong fiscal manner.

Constituent survey results

     The topic of my newsletter a few weeks ago was a 21-question survey to help me gauge constituent opinion on a variety of issues that the Legislature could face this session. The survey was in my newspaper column and was also conveyed through e-mail to a growing list of District 58 citizens who receive the newsletter by those means. I was pleased to receive 124 survey responses, as well as many thoughtful and interesting additional comments, which I am working my way through as time permits.

District Court

     Kevin Alan Rowray, Anamosa, pleaded guilty to OWI 1st offense. He was fined $1,250 plus court costs and sentenced to three days in jail. Rowray also had a charge of driving while barred, dismissed.

     Justin Blake Ritzman, Marion, pleaded guilty to reckless use of fireworks. He was fined $315 plus court costs and sentenced to 30 days in jail. His sentence was suspended, and Ritzman was placed on self-supervised probation for one year. He also had a charge of explosive/incendiary device, dismissed.

     Beau Alan Ehrisman, Monticello, pleaded guilty to defective/unauthorized muffler system. He was fined $20 plus court costs.

     John Daniel Baker, Cedar Rapids, was found guilty to public intoxication. He was fined $200 plus court costs. Judgment was deferred on a count of interference with official acts. Baker was fined a civil penalty of $100 plus court costs, and placed on probation for one year.
