Midland attends two DeWitt tournaments

Boys wrestling

   Midland compete in a boys wrestling tournament Dec. 21 in DeWitt, finishing 11th with a team score of 58.

   Dane Ballou was champion at 175 pounds for the Eagles, scoring two pins and a technical fall to up his season record to 12-3.

   Wyatt Christiansen was fourth at 157, and Rylan Graves took fifth at 150.

   The meet closed the 2024 portion of the Eagles’ season.

Petersen earns

Athlete of the

Week honor

   Tate Petersen of Monticello, a sophomore at Kirkwood Community College, was named Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Male Athlete of the Week as a member of the Eagle men’s basketball team.

   Petersen scored 20 points against John Wood and a career-high 28 points against third-ranked Des Moines Area Community College, helping Kirkwood move up to No. 2 in the national rankings.

Panthers win in closer games

   As the Monticello Panthers delve into a more difficult portion of the boys basketball schedule, they are finding themselves in more competitive games.

   It hasn’t stopped them from winning, however, as the Panthers ran their season record to 4-0 with a pair of home victories last week, 59-45 over West Liberty and 58-51 over Bellevue.

Both Comet teams fall to Panthers

   The River Valley Conference has two schools that use the nickname “Comets.”

   The Monticello Panther girls overcame both of their girls basketball teams last week, scoring victories by similar, lopsided margins and extending the Panthers’ winning streak to four.

   The Panthers won the games – both at home – by scores of 58-33 Dec. 10 over West Liberty, and 67-40 Nov. 26 over Bellevue.

Panthers split home duals

   One team victory and several individual highlights came out of a double dual boys wrestling meet for the Monticello Panthers Dec. 12 in Monticello.

   The Panthers won the first of their two duals Thursday, defeating Mid-Prairie 48-21. Then, Monticello lost to Iowa City Regina 45-21, coming out of the evening with a 3-2 overall dual meet record for the season.

Durant sweeps Panther teams

   Monticello High School bowling coach Brian Meyer has a theory about being the home team in that sport.

   And it applied to the losses the Panther teams absorbed in a trip to Idle Hour Lanes in Durant Dec. 10 to take on the Wildcats.

   “We have never, to my recollection, won an event at Durant,” Meyer said. “And I don’t think that their teams have always been superior to ours. But as I’ve said many, many times over the years, there is no home field advantage in any sport, in my opinion, greater than bowling.”

   For the third straight week, I hit on both of my bets on NFL games. It boosted my season record to 17-11-2.

   More importantly, I made a profit of $1.82, lifting my season profit to $4.38.

   Since I pledged to bet two games every week, at $1 per, and there are three weeks left in the regular season, I will be betting a total of $6 the rest of the way.

   So the worst that could happen is a season loss of $1.62.

Eagles find success in pair of tournaments

Girls wrestling

   Two tournaments kept the Midland girls wrestling team occupied last week.

   Midland started the week by attending a massive tournament Dec. 9 in Williamsburg, which featured 29 teams. The Eagles scored 59.5 points to finish in 15th place.

   Taelynn Gravel scored three pins and won the championship at 105 pounds.

   Alyssa Eckhardt took third at 125 pounds, going 4-1 for the day.

Taylor goes 3-0 in quadrangular

   The Anamosa girls wrestling team competed in a quadrangular meet Dec. 9 in Bellevue, facing three opponents.

   Monticello’s Izzy Taylor, wrestling for Anamosa, went 3-0 for the day with a pin and two forfeit wins.

   Anamosa won two of the three duals, beating Bellevue 39-12 and Maquoketa 42-6. The Blue Raiders lost to West Liberty 48-24.
