COLUMN: McGregor vs. Mayweather

     Let’s just say we were a little nervous going into the McGregor vs. Mayweather fight last Saturday night. Some friends of ours purchased the fight and invited us over, along with others.

     About an hour or so before the main attraction, we discovered the servers for the fight had crashed in Florida and California. It looked like we may not get to see the fight after all.

Caskey, Keltner win at Wapsi

     Ean Caskey of Lisbon and Raechel Keltner of Manchester were the male and female winners of the Wapsi Warrior Challenge 6-kilometer race Saturday, Aug. 26 at Wapsipinicon State Park in Anamosa.

     Caskey finished the course in 23 minutes, 25.6 seconds. Keltner’s time was 32:45.9.

     Both were among 119 runners who completed the course, which featured obstacles such as water, mud, downed trees, hay bales and more.

     CCMuddMonsters won the team championship, with an average time of 27:34.

     Overall and age group results follow.

 

Monticello is fifth in EIGA

     Chance Manternach finished second overall and Brian McDonald finished in the top 10, as the Monticello Golf Club team took fifth place in the Men’s Eastern Iowa Golf Association (EIGA) Tournament Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 12-13 at Wahkonsa Golf Course in Durant.

     Manternach’s score of 147 was one stroke behind medalist Sterling McIlravy of Solon. Brian McDonald totaled 151.

Monarch tagging

program is set

     Join the Jones County naturalist at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Central Park Nature Center to help catch and tag live monarch butterflies.

     Learn about the magnificent migration of the monarch butterfly. Find out why scientists and citizen volunteers across North America are tagging monarchs. Then try your skill at catching and tagging a few monarch butterflies of your own. Bring your own butterfly net or borrow one of ours.

Riley wins Express Football Contest

     Kris Riley of Monticello missed three games and claimed the first Express Football Contest of 2017.

     Her tie-breaker (TB) score of 54 (83 actual) earned her the $15 first place prize.

     Second place and $10 went to Dana Freese of Cascade, who missed three games and had a TB score of 53.

     Also missing three games, and their TB scores, were Phil Kauder of Cascade (47), Kathy Barta of Cedar Rapids (46), Ken Funke of Dubuque (44) and Mary Oberfoell of Monticello (39).

No. 2 Don Bosco downs Eagles

     Don Bosco of Gilbertville, ranked second in eight-player football to open the season, lived up to its billing at the expense of the Midland Eagles.

     Don Bosco scored a 60-26 win over Midland in the season opener Friday, Aug. 25 in Gilbertville.

     “We played an extremely talented Don Bosco team,” Midland coach Casey Hack said. “We battled hard all night, but we struggled to get anything going. Don Bosco’s speed gave us a lot of problems.”

JV Panthers edge Anamosa

     Monticello grabbed a 12-7 lead over Anamosa, and made it stand in the junior varsity football opener Friday, Aug. 25 at Dean Nelson Field.

     Two big plays near the end of the game helped seal the win for the Panthers. First, Jeff Carlson kicked a long punt that Monticello downed at the Anamosa 10-yard line with 1:52 to play, On the next play, Tyler Luensman intercepted an Anamosa pass at the Blue Raider 36, enabling Monticello to run out the clock.

PREVIEW: Panthers to count on depth for improved record

     Injuries are usually bad for an athletic team, but in the case of the Monticello High School football team, last year’s injuries may wind up helping the Panthers this season.

     “We have quality depth at a lot of positions this year,” second-year head coach Wes Wilson said. “Some guys were able to get good experience last year with our injuries, which has really helped our depth.”

     Both the girls’ and boys’ teams for Monticello High School cross country enter this season with credentials that would be the envy of most athletic programs – of any sport – in the state of Iowa.

     The five seniors on this year’s girls’ team have had a hand in two state team championships and a runner-up finish in the past three years.

     The four seniors on the boys’ team have helped add to a state meet-qualifying streak that began before any of them were born – now 20 years straight.

PREVIEW: Senior-led Panthers aim to be in River Valley mix

     A senior-dominated, tall, talented, athletic Monticello High School volleyball team has high hopes for the 2017 season.

     The Panthers finished right at the .500 mark last season at 15-15, but is counting on greater things this fall.

     “We are senior dominated, and feel with their leadership and determination, we will be strong,” said Stacie Breitbach, who is in her third year of coaching the Panthers.

     “We have a good mix of height, strength and quickness.”
