Panthers have matching fourth-place finishes at Anamosa

   The similarities the girls and boys cross country teams at Monticello High School are noticeable.

   In each case, an elite runner has emerged, and others are stepping up in hopes of helping the team at their various varsity spots.

   In each case on Saturday, the Panthers finished fourth as a team at the Anamosa Invitational on a moderate, breezy morning.

   The girls were led by Leah Koehler, who was third overall. Her time of 20:09.4 beat her Anamosa time a year ago by 1:30.

Rebels get quick start, top Panthers

   Northeast scored on its first five possessions, and racked up 488 total yards, to hand a defeat to the Monticello Panthers, 48-7, in a Class 2A, District 4 football game.

   The undefeated Rebels took control early, with three touchdowns in the first 9:23 of the game. Much of the damage was done by quarterback Gavin Kramer, who passed for 161 yards and rushed for 128.

   “Northeast has a very good quarterback,” Monticello coach Wes Wilson said. “He is tough to game-plan for  and makes plays with his arm and feet.”

COLUMN: NFL games derail some contestants

   I like to look for trends in sports, and I may found kind of a fun one when it comes to the Express Football Contest.

   It seems the good people who participate in our contest each are, in general, much more proficient in picking the winners of high school and college games than they are in NFL games. At least they were last week.

Hectic week: Monti goes 5-2

   A split of two River Valley Conference matches, and a near-miss of a tournament championship created a hectic week for the Monticello volleyball team.

   The Panthers lost an 11-25, 21-25, 19-25 decision at Dyersville Beckman Sept. 24; but bounced back to sweep Camanche Sept. 26 at home, by scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-23.

Junior varsity

   One match was a win, and the other one didn’t necessarily feel like a loss.

   The Monticello junior varsity volleyball team went 1-1 last week, losing at Dyersville Beckman 13-25, 25-23, 7-15; and defeating Camanche 25-17, 25-15 in Monticello.

   For the Beckman match, Panther head coach Allison Manternach said, “We did a lot of really nice things against a tough Beckman team. We fought back to win the second set after a slow start.”

Eagles' season reaches halfway point

Cross Country

   “We are halfway done with the season and now we should be preparing to make our end of the season runs. Unfortunately, through school illness and the injury bug, we are not close to peaking.

   “This last week, we ran at Bellevue and Anamosa. At Bellevue, the boys ran in a tight bunch with good times. Connor DeForest led the way with a time of 19:47 followed by Jayson Ruley with a time of 20:12 and Carter Willms rounded the race up with a time of 20:43.

Kuper becomes USF solo blocks career leader

   Jordan Kuper’s senior season with the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) volleyball team is off to a great start. Kuper, a Monticello High School graduate, recently became the school’s all-time leader in solo blocks.

   Earlier, she recorded 42 kills and 17 blocks to earn All-Tournament honors at the Kansas City (Mo.) Classic tournament in early September.

 

 

 

 

Freese misses once, wins football contest

   Dana Freese of Monticello missed just one game, and is the $15 first prize winner for Week Five of the Express Football Contest.

   Three contestants missed two games each. Winning second place and $5 with the closest tie-breaker score was Nick Hein of Monticello, who picked 50 (actual total of the Monticello game was 55).

   Also missing two games, and their tie-breaker scores, were Dave Messerli of Marion (42) and Brad Freese of Monticello (39).

Lyons wins; girls are third at Anamosa

   Mary Grace Lyons was the individual winner, and the Monticello girls took third place in the middle school division of the Anamosa Invitational Cross Country Meet Sept. 28.

   Lyons finished in a time of 12:24.3 for the two miles, beating runner-up Mailee Schmidt of Solon by 14.4 seconds.

   In the boys’ race, the Panthers were fourth. Henry Wolken led the way with a ninth place finish.

Springville title caps Panthers' big week

   In a season of big matches and successful results, last week’s contests involving the Monticello volleyball team were among the biggest and most successful.

   The Panthers went up to Cascade Sept. 19 and swept their neighboring rival in three sets to lift their River Valley Conference, North Division record at 2-1.

   Then, they competed in the Springville Invitational Sept. 21, working through five matches and winning them all, including a nail-biter of a championship match against Jesup.
