On Saturday, Oct. 20, Jones Regional Medical Center held its sixth annual Pink in the Park at Wapsipinicon State Park in Anamosa to help raise money for local mammography patient services. The 4K-walk/run event brought out 150 participants, including about a dozen Anamosa youth as part of the Running Raider Marathon Club, organized by Nick and Heather Weers. Staff report

This year was the seventh year in a row the Monticello Express organized the annual Pink Out event on Oct. 17. The annual occasion honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October). This year, over $3,500 was raised, with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward cancer services provided locally at UnityPoint Health – Jones Regional Medical Center.

In an effort to raise money for the local cause, the Express encouraged every business, organization, school and individual to wear pink on Oct. 17. Those who signed up for the photo opportunity are featured inside this week’s Express on pages A10-11 in our Pink Out photo spread. Those featured were asked to donate a minimum of $25.

Over the past few years, the Express’ Pink Out fundraiser helped to raise money for the purchase of a 3-D mammography machine for JRMC. With that purchase, the hospital has helped to save lives by detecting breast cancer earlier. The pink donor wall at JRMC lists the Monticello Pink Out as a contributor toward this wonderful service.

Choosing to donate the proceeds to JRMC assists in their efforts to fight cancer and treat cancer patients. Many people travel to JRMC to seek cancer treatment services close to home.

Over the past seven years now, the Express and greater Monticello community has been able to raise over $15,000 to help those battling cancer. A huge thanks goes out to our generous businesses and organizations throughout Monticello and Jones County. Our annual Pink Out event remains a huge success!

Again, the top donor was Polo Custom Products in Monticello, internally raising $1,500. Polo’s corporate offices in Topeka, Kan., also contributed with $800. In an effort to raise the money, Polo’s employees held several bake sales, lunches, silent auctions, and sold homemade items. Each department came up with their own Breast Cancer Awareness theme to out-raise one another.

The Express had many returning businesses this year, as well as some new ones showing off their pink pride in the fight against cancer.

Thanks to all those who took part in this year’s Pink Out in helping to make a difference!
