‘Under the Rainbow’

Letter to the Editor

To Monticello Veterans,

We sat under the rainbow

A long long time ago,

On top of the hillside

Where the lilies-of-the-valley grow.

We watched the shadows in the clouds

A long long time ago,

As they played hide-and-seek

Giving us an entertaining show.

We laughed, held hands

A long long time ago,

Not far from a creek

Where the sparkling waters flow.

He and I gazed at the bluebirds

A long long time ago,

I would put my head on his shoulder

Thinking, “I don’t want you to go.”

I thought I could hear sounds of war

A long long time ago,

Like bombs and bullets

And color of raging fires aglow.

I thought I was just dreaming

A long long time ago,

Yes, jut a daydream

Certainly there would be time for our love to grow.

I remember so well

A long long time ago,

The dreaded orders came

They came for you to go.
