Jones County Central

     The Jones County Central 4-H Club held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017 at the Lawrence Community Center.

     The meeting was called to order at 6:46 p.m. by president Wesley Henderson. Koree Miller led the Pledge of Allegiance. The secretary’s report was given. Elizabeth Riniker moved to approve the minutes and it was seconded by Ericka Braden; it passed by majority vote. The treasurer’s Report was given. Gracie Henderson moved to approve the treasurer’s report and Ali Braden seconded it; it passed by majority vote. Roll call was – “Describe yourself using a weather term.” It was answered by 15 members. There were three leaders and five guests present.

     Old Business: Online enrollment and Code of Ethics forms need to be turned in and completed if you have not done so.

     New Business: The Club bylaws were passed out to each member, so that members knew the club expectations. Volleyball is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11 at Monticello Middle School; a list was taken by leader Cinda Petrick. Officer training is scheduled for Nov. 19, 1:30 to 3 p.m. Awards day is Sunday, Nov. 12 at the Jones County Youth Development Center in the evening. Members enrolled and present will receive a gift. The Christmas Tree Walk is December 8-10 at the Lawrence Community Center. It was moved by Gracie Henderson and seconded by Ericka Braden to have a tree at the tree walk. It passed by majority vote.

     Koree Miller moved and Grace Lubben seconded to donate items to three hospitals. The club will donate Christmas cards, tie blankets, DVDs, books, games, and cards to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, University of Iowa Children’s Hospital and Clinics, and Blank Children’s Hospital. We will again participate in the Christmas STAR program. The club has turned in the paperwork and will receive a family by Nov. 11 and shopping will begin. We will be wrapping these gifts at our December meeting and it was agreed that the club would buy a toy, an outfit, and hat & gloves for every child in the family along with cleaning items, food, and an essential basket for the family.

     Our Christmas party is scheduled for Dec. 3 at the Jones County Youth Development Center at 4:30 p.m. Edgewood Locker meat will be served along with many different activities planned. Please bring a dozen cookies/bars to the December meeting, so that the cookie appreciation platters can be assembled to be given to eight businesses for their continued support of 4-H in Jones County. It was also announced that each member needs to bring two non-perishable items to the next meeting for distribution to HACAP and Senior Dining Shut-Ins.

     The Beef weigh-in will be held Dec. 23 at Kirkwood Community College Tippie Beef Center for any market beef animal(s) that may possibly be shown at the Iowa State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben. For any market beef animal(s) that are only going to the county fair, weigh in will be Dec. 30 at the Cascade Sale Barn. The club members participated in timed activities, assembling a transformer, building a brain simulation on how nerves and thoughts are connected, and a pumpkin quiz. We finished up with exercise activities, square push-ups and sit-ups. Healthy snacks of grapes and apples were handed out.

     The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m. with the 4-H Pledge being led by Maisie Paulsen.
