Scotch Grove Challengers

     The meeting of the Scotch Grove Challengers was held March 3, 2019 at the Monticello Renaissance Center in Monticello at 6 p.m.

     President Kristen Roher called the meeting to order. Members answered the roll call topic: “Share an Idea of Saving Energy.” The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Tate Jesenovec. The Secretary’s Report was given by Tate Jesenovec, Royce Kiburz made the motion to approve the Secretary's Report, Aedan Althoff seconded. Motion approved. Kacie Rickels provided the Treasurer’s Report, Royce Kiburz made the motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report, Gavin Cooper seconded. Motion approved.

     Members were reminded T-Shirt orders are due April 1.

     YQCA needs to be completed by July 1 for those 4-H members that will be showing pigs, beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, market rabbits and poultry at the Great Jones County Fair.

     New Business: Looking for volunteers to do the Communication & Clothing Event, Clothing Event on March 31 and Communication Event on April 6. Need to have paperwork into the extension office by Tuesday, March 5. The club talked about the horticulture program talking points and garden maps, as well as the Theisen’s grant and type of gardens we can plant to display at the Great Jones County Fair. We need a volunteer to do this for our club.

     A date change for the Derby Swine Weigh-in was announced; it is now scheduled for March 30. The club also discussed fair passes and club fundraising.

     Tom Dirks made the motion to adjourn the meeting; Royce Kiburz seconded. Motion carried. The Pledge to the 4-H Flag was led by Royce Kiburz. Annie Schlarmann did a presentation on rabbits. Tate Jesenovec did a presentation on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. Tommy Dirks did a presentation on welding equipment.

Prairie Hill

     The March meeting of the Prairie Hill 4-H Club was called to order at 6:17 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2019 at the Youth Development Center by Adele Hogan, President. The pledge to the American Flag was led by Bella Mullen. Roll call of “Where would you like to go on vacation” was answered by 37 members; four leaders and nine guests also attended.

     Lake Schnoor, Treasurer, reported that there is $4,947.57 in the club’s checking account. Karla Koehler presented three bills to be paid. Bella Mullen made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report and the bills. Grant Gassman seconded the motion. Motion carried.

     Kendall Siebels organized a valentine card-making workshop with residents at Pennington Square Assisted Living for the Martin Luther King Day Challenge Feb. 7. Leah Koehler and Lily Moestchen helped also. Adele Hogan and Lauren Koehler made and distributed valentine cards to residents at the Pennington Square on Feb. 12. A committee was formed by members to design, plant, and grow the Prairie Hill Flower Pot to be displayed at the Great Jones County Fair this year. Swine Weigh-In is Saturday, March 30, from 8:30 to 10 a.m., at the Jones County Fairgrounds.

     YQCA training needs to completed by July 1 in order to exhibit the following animals at the Great Jones County Fair: pigs, sheep, goats, poultry, beef cattle, dairy cattle, and market rabbits.

     Registration for Iowa 4-H Youth Conference will open March 20. The conference is held on the campus of the Iowa State University for three days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you have completed eighth grade, you’re eligible to attend. ISU Behind the Scenes Fashion Show bus trip registrations are due on March 15. This event is open to any 9th-12th graders and will be held on April 12. Due to inclement weather, the Legislative Trip to Des Moines has been rescheduled to March 27. Registrations are due by March 15. This trip is open to 7th-12th graders. Registrations for Night at the Zoo Trip to the Minnesota Zoo are due by Friday, March 22. The trip will be from April 12-13 and is open to 7th-8th graders. Registration fee is $100. A community service project at Central Park was discussed.

     Presentations were giving by: Eian Weber on a hydraulic apparatus, Kole Weber on how to milk a goat, Lane Weber on how to lasso, Aubrey Lasack on splitting overgrown plants, and Grant Gassman on hurricanes. Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Claire Hogan and seconded by Jessica Stadtmueller. Motion carried. The Pledge to the 4-H Flag was led by Valerie Cupples.
