Prairie Hill 

The April meeting of the Prairie Hill 4-H Club was called to order at 6:21 p.m. on Monday, April 8, 2019 at the Youth Development Center by Adele Hogan, president. The pledge to the American Flag was led by Lane Weber. Roll call of “What is your favorite food?” was answered by 31 members. Five leaders and 11 guests attended. 

 

Lake Schnoor, treasurer, reported that there is $4,908.81 in the club’s checking account. Lily Moestchen made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report. Grant Gassman seconded the motion. Motion carried. There were no bills. 

 

Old Business: YQCA training needs to be completed by July 1 to be eligible to show livestock at the Great Jones County Fair. Tred Schnoor discussed a community service project with the Jones County Conservation at Central Park. 

 

New Business: Jazz Husmann led a discussion on the selection of new Prairie Hill 4-H Club T-shirts. Donating to the 4-Hers for 4-H campaign was discussed. Junior 4-H camp is June 10-13 at Pictured Rocks Monticello; registration forms are due May 15. All animals must be identified as possible fair project in 4-HOnline by May 15. If your animal has no identification it can’t be shown at the Jones County Fair. 

 

The 4-H County Council Project Fair is on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Jones County Extension Office. You will get the chance to learn more about 4-H projects, opportunities, and upcoming events at the project fair. Also you will learn things you need to know for showing animals at the fair, learning about school projects as fair exhibits, and how to write a goal. The 4-H Teen Council has decided to create another Barn Quilt for the 2019 fair. Members volunteered to design and come up with ideas for the Prairie Hill patch. 

 

Market Broiler/Roaster Orders are due May 1 to the Extension Office. The ISU Horticulture Bus Trip has been scheduled for Wednesday May 1. During this trip you will get to visit and tour the ISU Horticulture Department and Reiman Gardens in Ames. It costs $50 to attend. Registration deadline is April 24. Sheep and Goat Weigh for Derby Lambs, Market Lambs, and Meat Goats is Saturday, April 27, from 8 to 10 a.m., at the Great Jones County Fairgrounds. A discussion was led by the leaders about the Club Garden Talking Points and the formation of a committee for the Garden Club Challenge and The Potted Pepper Plant Challenge. 

 

Showmanship General Care Clinic will be held on Saturday, May 4 at the Clayton County Fairgrounds. The clinic will be from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 10:30 a.m. To register, contact Lillie Beringer by April 17. Dog project kickoff workshop meeting is on Thursday, April 25, from 7-8 p.m. at the Jones County Extension Office. 

 

Presentations were given by Izzy Taylor on Barrel Racer Amberley Snyder, Lincoln Schneiter on Angus Cattle, Kyle Arduser on Hurricanes, and Alex Jamison on Football. A motion to adjourn the meeting was led by Valerie Cupples and seconded by Taylor Gassman. The pledge to the 4-H Flag was led by Caleb Hogan.

Prairie Hill 

The May Meeting of the Prairie Hill 4-H Club was called to order at 6:18 p.m. on Monday, May 13, 2019 at the Youth Development Center by Adele Hogan, president. The pledge to the American Flag was led by Izzy Taylor. Roll call of “Name a project you are taking to the fair?” was answered by 28 members. Five leaders and seven guests were in attendance. 

 

Lake Schnoor, Treasurer, reported that there is $4,303.81 in the club’s checking account. Kendal Siebels made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report. Izzy

 

Taylor seconded that motion. Motion carried. There were no bills. 

 

Old business: YQCA training is due by July 1 if you plan to show pigs, sheep, poultry, goats, beef cattle, dairy cattle and/or market rabbits. Grades 10-12 are invited to spend the night at the Omaha Zoo. Registration fee is $100, which includes transportation, zoo admission, and meals. The bus will be leaving mid-day on Sunday, June 2, and returning on Monday, June 3. Registration was due by Wednesday, May 15. Tred Schnoor led a discussion regarding the service project at Central Park. Jazz Husmann discussed the Prairie Hill Club t-shirts. Nicole Moestchen discussed the garden club challenge. 

 

New business: Proposed quilt square designs by members were voted on. Keegan McElmeel’s design won. The 2019 Jones County Fair books are posted online for your reference. Showing off your Green Thumb Exhibit: Prep 101 is Saturday, June 29 at 1-3 p.m. You will learn how to prepare and select your horticulture exhibits for The Great Jones County Fair and The Iowa State Fair. RSVPs are due by Tuesday, June 25. 

 

A presentation was given by Claire and Adele Hogan on “Trail Mix.” A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Loreli Rieken and seconded by Mace Schnoor. Motion carried. The Pledge to the 4-H Flag was led by Bella Mullen.

Scotch Grove Challengers 

The meeting of the Scotch Grove Challengers was held at the Monticello Renaissance Center in Monticello on April 7, 2019. 

 

President Kristen Roher called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. Twenty-four members answered the roll call topic, “Name a random act of kindness that you did or plan to do this year.” Sixteen guests were present. Will Wolken led the Pledge of Allegiance. Tate Jesenovec read the Secretary’s Report. There were no additions or corrections. Tom Dirks made the motion to approve the Secretary’s Report and Royce Kiburz seconded. Motion carried. Kacie Rickels provided the Treasurer’s Report. Tyler Soppe made the motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report and Will Wolken seconded. Motion carried. 

 

New business: The Showmanship General Care Clinic is in Garnavillo May 4. County 4-H Club Barn Quilt; need volunteers to design a square. 

 

Joseph Schrader did a presentation on the numbers on a golf ball and what they mean. Brady Hayen did a presentation on the things you’ll need for showing pigs. Gavin Cooper did a presentation on Smoking a Beef Brisket. Nicholas Schrader did a presentation on the things that are needed for baseball. Steven Bader did a presentation on when you should prepare/work on lawn mowers. Davin Wickman made the motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Aedan Althoff. Steven Bader led the pledge to the 4-H flag.

Olin 4-H Club 

The Olin 4H club held its monthly meeting on June 2, 2019. Reports were read. A recap of our taco/potato supper fundraiser was given. Food stand shifts for our club at the fair are Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Our FAST judging time is at 10:30 a.m. on Monday and checkout is Sunday at 6:30 p.m. We did a team building activity of a tic tac toe race. We had a fair booth work session to get things ready for the booth. 

 

Mikayla VonBehren gave a presentation on how to make a plant terrarium. Our next meeting will be July 7 at 5 p.m. at the Olin Legion Hall.
