Jones County Central

     The Jones County Central 4-H Club held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at the Jones County Youth Development Community Center.

     The meeting was called to order at 1:20 p.m. by Autumn Kirby. Alex Shover led the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary’s Report was given with Maisie Paulsen moving to approve and Nichelle Kirby seconding the motion.  Treasurer’s Report was given and it was moved by Lauren Oltmanns to approve the report. It was seconded by Ava Capron and it passed by majority vote. Roll call was – “March Ice Breaker.” It was answered by 15 members. There were three leaders and four guests present.

     Old Business: The t-shirt and sweatshirt order is still being worked on. As soon as everything is set and t-shirts/sweatshirts are on order, you will be notified. The YQCA program is going to continue the quality assurance program. There will be face-to-face meetings, which are scheduled for Monday March 9, 6:30-8 p.m. at Cascade High School, and Monday, June 15, 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Anamosa High School. Face-to-face certification only costs $3 per year. If you chose to do online certification, it will still cost you $12. Both are still only good for one year.

     Lauren Oltmanns and Nichelle Kirby both attended the 4-H Youth Lock-In and said they had a fantastic time. Delivery for the Edgewood Locker fundraiser meat will be on April 18, either in Monticello or Anamosa. Thank you to everyone who sold! The swine weigh-in will be held Saturday, April 4, 8:30 to10 a.m. If you are doing the single source swine class then our weigh-in time is 10 to 10:30 a.m.  The sheep and goat weigh-in will be held Saturday, April 25, 8 to 10 a.m. There is more information on the Jones County 4-H Facebook page. The Clothing Event and Communication Day will be held Saturday, May 2. Entry forms are due April 3. County 4-H Workshops include horse clinics, pet workshop, jam and preservation workshop, swine workshop, rabbit workshop, and horticulture workshops. All these workshops have RSVP date requirements to contact the Extension Office.

     New Business: The Iowa State University Farm Trip will be Friday, April 10. It is open to grades 7-12 and you will be receiving your YQCA certification. Space is limited and costs $50. RSVPs are due March 27. Working the Night Shift Bus Trip will be held March 27-28. More information will be coming out soon from the Extension Office. The Omaha Zoo Intermediate Trip is scheduled for April 17-18. More information is coming soon from the Extension Office. The Horticulture Club Challenge’s theme this year is “What was old is new again.” May 15 is right around the corner, so make sure you have met all your deadlines.      The meeting was adjourned at 1:46 p.m. with the 4-H Pledge being led by Brooklyn Stark.
