Lexah Miller, freshman at Anamosa High School, has been selected as one of just three winners of the UnityPoint Health Prescription Drug Safety Student Blog Contest and was awarded a $1,000 college savings gift card.

This contest was part of UnityPoint Health’s sponsorship of a new education program for high school students about the dangers of prescription drug misuse and abuse, aimed at combating the national opioid epidemic.

Students were asked to write about how the UnityPoint Health Prescription Drug Safety Program had a personal impact on them and if they would change anything in their past using the information they learned. They were also asked to share about someone in their life who has been impacted by prescription drug misuse or abuse and what they learned from the program that could have helped in that situation.

“This program will help me avoid problems down the road,” Miller wrote in her contest entry. “Instead of avoiding the problem, I will help them by talking to them and letting them know they have someone that cares about them.”

Miller says she plans to go into the healthcare field after college.

UnityPoint Health was the first health system in the nation to join the Prescription Drug Safety Network, a nationwide coalition committed to empowering Americans with skills to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drug use for themselves, their families and their communities.
