Emma Althoff had a top-20 finish, and Carter Kurt started and finished well during the State Class 3A Cross Country Meet Friday, Oct. 30 at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

In what has been a strange season all around, the two Panther runners had the unique experience of being the only ones from their school in each race.

Both responded, Monticello coach Dan Sauser said, the best they could.

“They both had good races, and it was a good end to the season for them,” Sauser said.

Althoff, a sophomore who ran eighth at State last year while competing in Class 2A as a freshman, finished 20th in this year’s 3A field, with a time of 19:56.2.

“Emma ran a really good race all the way through,” Sauser said. “That was a really tough field. She beat a couple of girls who beat her at the state qualifying meet.

“That’s going to set her up heading into next year.”

     Kurt, a junior was 64th in 17:30.7.

“That was another loaded field,” the coach said. “Carter went out aggressively, and had a real strong finish.”

Sauser said he is excited to have both runners return to their respective Panther squads next year.

“They are going to be the anchors of what look to be good teams,” he said.

Awards Monday

The Monticello cross country team will hold its annual awards meeting Monday, Nov. 9. Due to social distancing guidelines as a result of COVID-19, the event will be held in the high school auditorium, rather than the commons.
