Ambundo goes for 293 in MV win

Football

     Maquoketa Valley senior A.J. Ambundo rushed for 293 yards and four touchdowns, on 32 carries, as the Wildcats opened their football season with a 40-22 win at North Cedar Aug. 27.

     In all, MV had 401 rushing yards, as Preston Roling added 69 yards rushing. Quarterback T.J. Cook completed five of 16 passes for 29 yards. Lance McShane had three catches for 16 yards, and Avery Holtz had two for 13.

     Leading tacklers were Carter Klaren, Aidan Salow, Ambundo and McShane with six apiece. Roling made an interception, and Holtz recovered a North Cedar fumble.

     The Wildcats trailed 8-6 after one quarter, but outscored the Knights 28-8 over the second and third quarters to gain control.

 

Volleyball

     Maquoketa Valley opened its volleyball season by going 1-1 in a home triangular meet Aug. 26 in Delhi.

     The Wildcats swept Clayton Ridge 25-21, 25-15, and lost to Jesup 13-25, 16-25.

     MV had 17 kills in the Clayton Ridge match, led by Kylie Chesnut and Molly Anderegg with five apiece, Anna Deutmeyer and Carissa Sabers with three each. Kennedy Rausch collected 10 assists. Lily Huber served three aces, and Rausch had two.

     The Wildcats also had 45 digs, led by McKenna Thompson with eight, Chesnut with five, Avery Krapfl, Huber and Rausch with five apiece; Leah Ries, Kendra Hillers and Deutmeyer with four apiece.

     Against Jesup, Rausch again made 10 assists. Chesnut had five kills, Deutmeyer had four and Haley Ronnebaum had three. Thompson had eight digs, Ries had five and Krapfl had four.
