While the meet at Dubuque Senior April 2 didn’t go as well as the Monticello High School girls track and field team might have hoped, the Panthers did show they can bounce back.

Monticello scored in 12 events and totaled 46 points to finish sixth out of 15 teams at the Dyersville Beckman Invitational April 5, rebounding from the showing at Senior, in which they scored just 14 points.

“Friday at Beckman the girls came around, and most of the relays made significant time drops as well as a lot of individuals,” Monticello coach Vallerie Lynn said.

Gabby Guilford won the high jump, as she did in the Senior meet three days earlier. Monticello scored twice in the 3,000, with Karle Kramer (fourth) and Triniti Etzel (sixth).

“Karle Kramer got fourth in the 3,000 with a nice time for her first time running it, and she came back and finished fifth in the 1,500,” Lynn said.

“Leah Holub continues to improve. She placed sixth in the 100, eighth in the long jump and started both the sprint medley and the 4x100.

“Gabby Guilford won the high jump again, and also ran on the sprint medley and the 4x100. Payton Jaeger had a personal best in the shot put. The other outstanding performer was Emily Schlarmann, who ran two season bests in the 4x400 and 4x800.”

Lynn said the team will continue to focus on making big time cuts.

“We compete well, but we have a long way to go,” the coach said.

Guilford won the high jump at Dubuque Senior with a jump of 5-3. The Panthers also placed sixth in the 4x800 and eighth in the 4x400.

“We competed against mostly 4A and 3A schools,” Lynn said. “It was our first meet in two weeks, but I felt we were a little off.”
