A record crowd for this century, 820, poured into the Monticello Berndes Center for the annual Jones County Beef Banquet Saturday, March 18.

The banquet had its usual list of award-winners, scholarships, live and silent auctions, but added a new twist: a Jones County Idol karaoke contest, won by Holly Beringer of Cascade.

Robert Burlage of Monticello was inducted into the Jones County Cattlemen Hall of Fame. Burlage started his farming and cattle feeding career in 1960 after returning from his service in the Army. He added a partner in 1965 when he and Marilyn were married. They moved to the farm in 1966, until he fully retired from farming after 50-plus years, in 2011, turning the family business over to his kids.

Four students received Al Lubben Memorial scholarships: David Trumm of Cascade, $1,000; Cole Fishwild of Wyoming, $500; Gavin Timm of Monticello, $250; and Lauren Von Behren of Olin, $250.

Andy Petersen of WMT 600 served as master of ceremonies. Ivan Kurt conducted the annual auction.

The cattlemen also “passed the hat” among the large crowd to collect funds for wildfire relief in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Kansas; and raised $2,500. The cattlemen pledged to match the donation, bringing it to a total of $5,000.

Also speaking at the banquet were Mike Cline of Elgin, president of the Iowa Cattlemen Association; and Jones County cattleman Kevin Gassman on behalf of the Jones County Cattlemen Heifer Program.
