Monticello claimed team championships in the Class 1A/2A division, and earned respectable finishes – large schools included – of third (girls) and fifth (boys) at the Jim Hetrick Invitational Oct. 10 in DeWitt.

It was the final event before the River Valley Conference Meet, which was scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 15 in Iowa City.

“Overall it was an outstanding performance,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said.

This was the second year the Panthers had competed in the DeWitt meet, held at Grace Lutheran Camp, and both Monticello teams improved over their 2018 finishes on a cloudy, occasionally drizzly day.

The Panther girls moved from fifth last year to third this time, with freshman Ella Althoff finishing second individually.

Karle Kramer posted an 11th place finish, Emily Hendricks was 20th, Lydia Recker 23rd, Triniti Etzel 34th, Katie Roher 43rd, and Mya Postel 53rd. Hendricks knocked 43 seconds off her previous season best, and Althoff beat hers by one second.

“Emma had a great race,” Sauser said. “She is starting to learn she can run out front. Emily Hendricks took another continued step. I’m so happy with her progress. Lydia has run two solid races back-to-back.

“The girls took a step in the right direction. They’re hitting on all cylinders right now.”

Monticello’s boys moved up from seventh last year in DeWitt to fifth this year.

Jasper Nietert led the Panthers with a seventh place finish, setting a personal record by 27 seconds.

“We saw a larger gap from one through five (in the lineup), but part of that was Jasper Nietert running so well. When you get in the 16s (16:59.3), that puts you in the elite category. Now we have to get the other kids to follow his lead and get to the next level.”

Cole Cruise came in 21st, Harrison Ahlrichs was 23rd, Zach Chapman ran 33rd, Carter Cruise was 55th, Grant Hospodarsky was 60th, and Dylan Ponder was 63rd.

In the junior varsity races, the Panther girls finished fourth and the boys were fifth in their respective races.

The girls were led by Sarah Spence, who finished 24th, and had six season-best performances Faith Hansen was 32nd and Gabrielle Guilford was 33rd. Kehde Campbell and Hansen set new personal records.

For the boys, who had 12 season bests, Ian Temple ran 19th, Gavin Baugh was 21st and Jacob Miller finished 26th. Miller, technically 10th on the overall team for this race, started the season as its 21st runner. He ran a season best time by 1:05. Nathan Sauser chopped 1:10 off his previous season best.

“Overall I was pleased with the boys’ effort,” coach Sauser said.
