'Best of the year' for Midland at Bellevue

Cross country

     Two meets kept the Midland cross country team running last week, the first in Bellevue and the second in Anamosa.

     At Bellevue Sept. 17, the Eagles “ran their best meet of the year,” Midland coach Jon Eganhouse said.

     Trent Rickels led the team with a personal record of 19 minutes, 54 seconds. Tanner Stoll had a time of 21:58, Hunter Wink had a PR time of 22:56, and Bryce Rushford finished in 26:13.

     The Eagles traveled to the Anamosa Invitational Sept. 22, sending three runners. Rickels set another PR with a time of 19:37, Wink finished in 24:31, and Jacob Ervin had a time of 33:03.

 

Volleyball

     Midland (0-2, 1-22) started the week with a three-set loss at Easton Valley Sept. 18, with scores of 18-25, 8-25, 24-26. Mikayla Dosland had all 13 of the team’s assists, as kill leaders were Delanie Uppena with four, Drew Jensen and Brennah Ricketts with three apiece. Jensen also had three blocks and two aces, and Ricketts had two aces. The team had 36 digs, led by Uppena with 10 and Ella Rupp with eight.

     The Eagles then played host to Cedar Valley Christian Sept. 20, and lost in four sets, 23-25, 26-24, 19-25, 19-25. Uppena had 16 kills, 20 digs, and served 15-for-15 in the match. Morgan Soper contributed nine kills. Dosland had 30 assists and three aces. Emma Dusanek had 24 digs, Jensen had 16, and Rupp had 14. Ricketts served four aces.

     On Sept. 22, Midland competed in the North Cedar Invitational, and lost four matches. In the opening pool play match against North Cedar, the Eagles fell 8-21, 9-21. Arianna Hacke had four kills for Midland. Dosland made six assists.

     Against Springville, the Eagles lost 7-21, 14-21. The team had 20 digs, led by Rupp with five, Taylor Bahnsen with four and Lauryn Eganhouse with three.

     Midland won the first set against Calamus-Wheatland, 21-17, but lost the next two 16-21, 10-15. Uppena had 10 kills and Dosland had 20 assists to pace the offense. Soper also had five kills. Uppena had 12 of the team’s 41 digs, and Dusanek had nine. Ricketts and Rupp served two aces each.

     The Eagles then played Edgewood-Colesburg, and lost 17-21, 7-21. Bahnsen made 11 assists. Uppena and Bahnsen had three digs each.

 

Football

     Britan Martens rushed for 205 yards and passed for 187, and Midland jumped to a 44-6 halftime lead on the way to a 92-34 football win at Central Elkader Sept. 21.

     Martens rushed for four touchdowns and passed for four more. Jensen Dodge was on the receiving end of the scoring passes, while making five catches for 138 yards. Wilson Buckwalter had a pair of rushing touchdowns while rushing for 75 yards, and Alex Smith rushed for one score.

     Defensively, Brett Schoenherr had nine tackles, Griffin Gravel had eight, and Trevor Gudenkauf, Hunter Shoaff and Buckwalter had six apiece.

     The Eagles are 2-1 in Eight-player, District 3, and 5-1 overall.
