Jones County Secondary Roads is getting ready for a busy summer and construction season.

During the April 13 Jones County Board of Supervisor meeting, County Engineer Derek Snead and Assistant Engineer Todd Postel opened bids for two major county road projects.

Two bids were received for the 75th Avenue HMA (asphalt) overlay project west of the City of Cascade. Secondary Roads is taking the lead on this project, with a portion lying within city limits.

The engineer’s estimate for this particular project was $115,000. The total bid packages ranged from $88,146.40 ($77,238 for Jones County’s portion) from LL Pelling, to $89,017.40 ($78,306 for Jones County’s portion) from Kluesner Construction.

The board tabled awarding the bid until the Engineer’s Office had time to review the bid specifications. A bid will be awarded on April 20.

Six bids came in for the RCB (reinforced concrete box) culvert project on Madison Road.

     The engineer’s estimate was $225,500.

     The bids included:

     • McCulley Culvert Inc., $289,300.35

     • K Construction, $263,681.57

     • Taylor Construction, $471,838.55

     • Tschiggfrie Excavating, $329,278.45

     • Boomerang, $312,433.35

     • Iowa Bridge, $254,920.55 (lowest bid)

“It’s good to see the interest,” noted Postel. “They’re all good companies.”

Secondary Roads has previously worked with the majority of the contractors who bid on Madison Road. In fact, K Construction is currently building the culvert structures on Lead Mine Road.

The board also tabled awarding a bid until Snead and Postel have time to review the bids. Action will be taken on April 20.

“This is a pretty small project overall within the realm of what we were thinking,” Snead said of the scope of the project.
