Big inning lifts Cubs over Cascade
A four-run fourth inning broke open a tie game, and the Monticello Cubs went on to score a 6-4 Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League baseball victory over the Cascade Reds Aug. 4 in Cascade.
At the plate, the Cubs were led by Tanner Felton, who was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in; Michael Reuter, who drove in two runs, and Ryan Manternach, who batted 4-for-4 with two doubles and scored two runs.
Evan Boddicker pitched five innings to get the win for Monticello, allowing two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out five. Braylon Havel came on in the sixth inning and pitched the last two, earning a save.
“The game went well for us,” Cubs player-manager Tanner Felton said. “Evan Boddicker threw a great five innings for us. He batted every at bat, even when he went deep into counts.
“Ryan Manternach had a great night at the plate. Every ball he hit was barreled up. We hit well with runners in scoring position.”
The Cubs (8-13) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Collin Hoskins, scoring Braylon Havel.
Cascade took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run by Conner Grant.
Monticello knotted the game at 2-2 on an RBI single by Tanner Felton.
Then, the Cubs seized control in the fourth. Michael Reuter hit a two-run single, and Tanner Felton followed with a two-run double to put Monticello up 6-2.
The Reds rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to close the gap further.
The Cubs were scheduled to play at home against Dubuque Aug. 9, and have a league game remaining against Key West.
Wins in both would put Monticello in a coin flip with Farley to see which would qualify for the league playoffs.
