Each year, the Monticello High School cross country teams save one of their biggest meets, with the toughest competition, for – first.

The Panthers again opened the season at the multi-class, multi-talent Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational, matching strides with some of the state’s largest schools and best teams.

The overall results showed the Monticello girls as fifth overall, and second among Class 2A/3A schools, behind only Mid-Prairie. Cedar Falls was the overall team winner. The fifth place finish matched last year’s, tying for the school’s highest finish ever in that meet.

“It’s a good early-season test,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said. “I was very happy with the girls’ overall effort.”

Leading the way was Paige Holub, who finished fifth overall, and Taylor McDonald, who was 15th.

“They give us that one-two punch that we hope will help us all season long,” Sauser said.

As a team, the top five runners – Jordyn Patterson, Gabrielle Steiner and Emily Schlarmann rounded out that list – had a combined team time that was 1:15 faster than last year’s at the same meet.

“This is just a starting point,” the coach said.

The boys were 18th, and seventh in the 2A/3A division. Aaron Loes led the way with a 33rd-place finish, David Titman was 69th, and freshman Jasper Nietert was third on the team, taking 106th overall.

The Panther team time was about 3:30 faster than last year’s at Prairie.

“This team is ahead of last year’s team,” Sauser said.

In the JV races, the Panther girls won the 2A/3A division and were fourth overall. Natalie Newhard led the team, taking 28th individually, and Gabby Guilford was 31st and Sydney Ballou was 33rd.

“Six girls ran a high school race for the first time,” Sauser said. “It’s nice to see their continued improvement.”

The JV boys had a team time that was 8:30 better than a year ago, led by Carter Cruise, who improved his own 2016 time by about six minutes. The team finished third in the 2A/3A division and ninth overall.

“It was a great start to the season,” Sauser said.
