Monticello sophomore Corinne Gadient qualified individually in two events, and two Panther relays also qualified, as Drake Relays entries were announced on Saturday, April 22.

Gadient will run in the 800-meter run and the 1,500 at Drake, while Monticello’s 4x400 and 4x800 relays will compete as well. The Drake Relays are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, April 27-29 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

“Corinne making it in the two open events is a true testament to how gritty and determined a runner she truly is,” Monticello coach Darren Reade said.

“The 4x800 time is the second fastest time I’ve seen for a Monticello team this early in a season since I began coaching, and the 4x400 team has the fastest time I’ve seen this early in a season.”

The two relays earned their qualifying times the previous week at Tipton. Gadient’s 1,500 time at Maquoketa Valley last week was her qualifying time; her top 800 came April 11 at Anamosa.

As a team, the Panthers competed in two meets last week, winning their own invitational on Thursday, April 20 by 57 points, and finishing third in the Wildcat Relays at Maquoketa Valley April 17.

At Maquoketa Valley, the Panthers finished behind defending state Class 2A champion Cascade, and Decorah. Monticello scored 91.33 points, winning three events. Those included Paige Holub in the 800-meter run, Corinne Gadient in the 1,500 and the distance medley relay team. The Panthers were second in the sprint medley and 4x400 relays.

“The night started off well, with the sprint medley team running the fastest time I’ve seen for a Monticello team since I began coaching,” Reade said. “We thought maybe we’d sneak that relay into Drake as well, but we were just on the outside of qualifiers.”

At the Monticello meet, the seven event winners included Taylor McDonald in the 400, Corinne Gadient in the 800, Maria Recker in the 100 hurdles, Gabrielle Steiner in the 3,000, and the 4x400, shuttle hurdle and distance medley relays.

“This was some of the worst weather we have run in so far this season (cold, windy), but the girls still competed well,” Reade said. “It was good to see the relays doing well, and all of the open running events able to double score.”
