The highlight of a two-win week for the Monticello High School boys bowling team, and of the season so far, was taking down perennial powerhouse West Delaware in a match Dec. 6 at Legacy Lanes.

West Delaware lost four of its top bowlers from last season to graduation, but a win over that program is an achievement for a Panther program which is now in its third season.

“The Hawks had defeated us every time we faced them,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said. “However, I had a feeling we would turn the corner and start beating teams that have had our number. This was our first test of that opinion.”

Monticello won 3161 to 2792 over West Delaware, improving its record to 3-0. The Panthers won both phases of the match, winning the individual round by 207, and then averaging better than 220 per game to win the Baker (team) round, 1108 to 946. The Panthers scored 172, 210, 232, 245 and 249.

“We had not performed well in the team Baker portion of the (meets),” Meyer said. “After a hard week of team-based practice, I am happy to report we absolutely whacked the Baker games (against West Delaware). It was fabulous to see the excitement as one strike led to another. The team fed on each other and produced amazing results.”

Individually, Caleb Gillmore had two scores of 235 for a 470 two-game series. Easton Lee had a 414 series, and Gary Pasker totaled 400.

Monticello’s girls (2-1) also faced a highly-regarded West Delaware team, and the Panthers lost 2654 to 1973. Evee Krouse led Monticello with a 156-155–311 series, Louise Rydell had a 296 total, and Leah Holub totaled 280.

A highlight for the Panthers was winning the first Baker game, 188 to 148.

“The WD girls’ team is extremely skilled this season, and I fully expect them to make a run for a state title,” Meyer said. “We were overmatched. But I continue to be very proud of our girls’ team for their hard work and continued growth.”

Top JV scores against West Delaware included series of 427 for Noah Arduser, 422 for Philip King, and 406 for Eli Beitz. For the JV girls, Josie Brady had a 202 total.

“The JV boys performed extremely well,” Meyer said. “There are several players at this level that will bowl at the varsity level very soon. They are pushing the other teammates to keep improving.”

Neither JV contest had a complete final score, as the West Delaware bus loaded up before its boys could compete in Baker and its girls could bowl an individual round.

Cascade match

Both Panther teams came out on top in another home match, Dec. 3 against Cascade. The boys won 2806 to 2178, winning the individual round by nearly 500 and the Baker round by 131. Gillmore had a 439 series in that one.

The girls topped Cascade 1946-1898, winning both rounds narrowly. A key was the third Baker game, in which the Panther bowlers outscored the Cougars 191 to 116.

Cascade had no junior varsity team. Top JV bowlers for the Panthers included Arduser with a 424 series for the boys, and Louise Rydell with a 318 for the girls.
