Britts show Big Boar champ

IOWA STATE FAIR

“Captain” lived up to his name at the Iowa State Fair.

The crossbred boar owned by Bryan and Tricia Britt of Monticello earned the title of Big Boar Aug. 8 at the Iowa State Fair.

The 3½-year-old Captain weighed in at 1,254 pounds, 66 pounds ahead of the runner-up.

“It was exciting,” Bryan Britt said. “But we had no idea that he would draw the kind of attention that he did (afterward).”

Bryan said he thought Captain had potential for this year’s title about a year ago, and about nine months ago, the decision was made to enter him.

“You could tell; his demeanor was so docile,” Bryan said. “We knew he would have a good attitude at the fair. So we started pushing him hard. I figured I could get him to 1,200.”

Still, he said, one can’t be sure.

“It’s hard to judge the weight on a pig when it gets that big, because you hardly ever see that,” he said.

At the fair, he thought he had the winner, but had to wait for the results.

“When Gov. (Kim) Reynolds announced his weight, I got a big smile on my face,” Bryan said.
