A busy May leads to a busy summer

To say the month of May is a busy one here at the Express is an understatement.

Pete Temple and I say it every year, but it seems May gets busier and busier each year.

May indicates the start of spring, which means a lot of outdoor activities for the schools and community organizations.

May is also the end of the school year (though technically it’s June 3). This means there are a lot of end-of-the-year concerts and activities for all of the grades. The seniors also have several events to mark the end of their last year of high school.

We also have graduation and Memorial Day commemorations all in one weekend.

May is also the time of the year where we kick butt (more so than usual) to publish our special issue known as “Home & Building.” This three-section issue features stories on new construction, renovation projects, local contractors, residential and commercial projects galore! This is our biggest special section of the year!

Aside from all that, throw in the usual city, county, and school board meetings; our weekly coverage of sports and news in and around the community; not to mention the primary election and introduction of candidates.

And I’m trying to get all of my work done early for my much-anticipated vacation to Nashville next week! It seems surreal to actually be getting on an airplane right now, three years into the pandemic. Last September, my boyfriend and I drive a little over five hours to Door County, Wis. That trip was fun and much-needed, but it was still in the Midwest and only a car ride away.

The last time I was in a plane was in 2017 when my mom and I flew to Washington, D.C. It’s crazy to now be thinking of moments in our lives pre-COVID and post-COVID.

And why is it you spend time stressing out so much before a vacation, and then you get back and that stress is still there? There is so much I still have to do before we can leave, but the anticipation of getting away is very much on my mind!

While May is quite hectic, I have a feeling the summer will ramp up as well. The chamber, library, Parks and Rec, Conservation, and other community groups have lots of events planned. So stay tuned…
