It was a full schedule last week for the Monticello High School boys track and field team, highlighted by the appearance of two seniors in the prestigious Drake Relays.

Also included were a third place finish in the Anamosa Co-Ed meet April 23, and a sixth place at the Pacha Relays April 25 at Clear Creek-Amana.

At Drake, both Avery Martensen and Wade Picray competed Friday morning, April 26. Martensen had the fifth-best time out of 28 runners in the 110-meter hurdle prelims, 14.73 seconds, to reach the finals. There he finished seventh at 14.88.

“It was a great accomplishment for Avery,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said. “He ran a PR in the prelims to get to the finals, and ran a great final for seventh place.”

Wade Picray competed in the discus, and finished 19th with a throw of 142-foot-10.

“It was a great experience for Wade throwing out of Drake’s ring,” the coach said. “I hope it will give him more confidence when he returns for the state meet.”

Two days earlier, the Panthers scored 83 points to finish third behind Iowa City Liberty (139.5) and Mount Vernon (129) at the Anamosa meet.

The Panthers won two relays at the meet, the distance medley with the team of Gavin Cooper, Colin Jordan, Martensen and Carter Cruise; and the 4x400 with Caleb Sauser, Gavin Cooper, Martensen and Carter Cruise.

“Carter Cruise has been steadily improving his times,” coach Williams said. “He anchored our 1,600 medley and 4x400 to our best times of the year.”

The coach also praised the shuttle hurdle team of Caden Ungs, Ty Jesevnovec, Eian Weber and Grant Hospodarsky; which took seventh place at Anamosa.

“Our young hurdling crew continues to improve their time with each meet,” Williams said.

At the Clear Creek-Amana meet, Picray recorded Monticello’s highest event finish by winning the discus on a cold, blustery night. Carter Cruise finished second in the 800. Taking third were Lake Stahlberg in the shot put and the sprint medley relay team of Rylan Cooper, Gavin Cooper, Martensen and Carter Cruise.
