Candy Langerman, Council Ward 2

Candy Langerman
Address: Hillcrest Drive
Why did you want to run for city council? I would like to continue to be involved in making decisions that affect our city and its residents. I was appointed to the city council on April 14, 2019, and was elected by the voters in the following election. I have been involved and am up to date on the issues and decisions facing the city council.
What are some challenges/issues the city will face in the near future? One issue that our city struggles with is lack of housing and childcare. It’s always a challenge to maintain and improve our infrastructure, such as streets, waste water treatment, parks, buildings, etc. and stay within our budget.
Monticello has a lot of good things going for it. What would you like to improve on or change? I would like to see more people get involved by volunteering to serve on boards within the city, such as the Parks and Recreation Board, the Cemetery Board, the Library Board, Planning and Zoning, and others. All of the boards struggle to get people to serve on them and they are where ideas are formed to make additions and improvements to be brought before the city council.
What goals do you have for Monticello as a city council member? I would really like to be on the city that improves and completed the Sixth Street Ditch, so it becomes an efficient way to move water through town, is easier to maintain, and has continuity instead of maintained well is some areas and an eyesore in others.
There is a shortage of decent, affordable housing in Monticello. This impacts attracting new residents, which increases the city’s tax base. What could be done to bring new people to town? I believe we need more investors and contractors that have the ability to build apartment buildings and single-family homes at a pace that matches the need.
Additional comments: Please vote on Nov. 2, read the city council agendas, come to the city council meetings, contact your council members with your thoughts and concerns, consider running for a seat on the city council or serving on one or more boards, and please become involved in making decisions that affect all of us.
Thank you for choosing me to serve on the Monticello City Council, as well as your consideration in the upcoming election.
