'Cats compete at Anamosa

Girls track

     Maquoketa Valley scored 54 points and finished seventh in the Anamosa Early Bird Relays April 9.

     Linn-Mar Red won the meet with 159 points, Anamosa was second with 119, and Monticello placed third with 83.

     Lydia Helle had a second place finish in the shot put with a distance of 36-foot-6. Helle was also fifth in the discus.

     Finishing third were Sam Wall in the 400, and the shuttle hurdle team of Leah Ries, Kailyn Hogan, Caelyn Sands and Payton Beaman.

     The 4x100 relay team of Amaya Hunt, Hogan, Maddy Anderegg and Wall was fourth. Also fourth was the 4x400 team of Beaman, Kylie Chesnut, Allie Knipper and Hunt.

     The Wildcats also had two fifth place relays: the 800 sprint medley team of Knipper, Ella Imler, Hunt and Wall; and the 1,600 distance medley team of Imler, Emerson Whittenbaugh, Knipper and Jaiden Porter.

 

Boys track

     Maquoketa Valley finished third in the 16-team Jesup Invitational April 9.

     Grundy Center won the meet with 112 points, Jesup was second with 100, and Maquoketa Valley finished third with 90.

     Relays provided the bulk of MV’s points. Winning relays included the 4x400-meter team of Derek Becker, Evan Hoefer, James LeGassic and Chance Downs in 3 minutes, 53.48 seconds; the shuttle hurdle team of Derek Becker, LeGassick, Teige Hunt and Chad Neuzil in 1:02.62; and the 1,600 distance medley team of Daniel Hunter, LeGassick, Derek Becker and Downs in 3:41.40.

     Two Wildcats placed second individually: Neuzil in the 110 hurdles and Blake Becker in the discus.

     In third place were LeGassick in the long jump, and the 4x100 relay team of Hunter, Hoefer, Neuzil and Owen Mensen.

 

Golf

     Both Maquoketa Valley golf teams competed in a triangular meet at Meadowview in Central City April 8.

     The MV girls won their meet with a team score of 212. Central City was second with 221, and Alburnett totaled 269. Kelly Winter led the Wildcats, finishing second overall with a 48. Mady Moenck shot 54, while Faith Hunt and Erika Supple each carded a 55.

     In the boys’ meet, Alburnett won with a team score of 186, Central City shot 200 and Maquoketa Valley scored 245. Isaac Zirtzman led MV with a 48, Morgan Hermanson shot 64, Tony Offerman had 65, and Garrett Lahr shot 68.

     “Although our scores were a little higher than we expected, I was happy to see some of the golfers bounce back with some solid scores when facing adversity on a couple of the holes,” MV coach Tim Andrews said.

     Maquoketa Valley’s teams then played host to East Buchanan April 9 at Hart Ridge in Manchester. The Wildcat girls won 181 to 184. Winter was medalist with 42, Moenck shot a 45, Hunt had 46, and Roling carded a 48.

     The MV boys lost 202 to 238. Zirtzman was medalist with a 43, Offerman shot 54, Lahr had a 66, and Dylan Lane scored 75.

     “Every week, it seems as though the girls’ team is climbing another mountain,” coach Andrews said. “Having four girls score in the 40s was a great accomplishment.

     “The boys put together a strong night, short-handed with three normal starters out.”
