'Cats escape Central City


Girls basketball

     Maquoketa Valley had its toughest challenge so far in this unbeaten season, pulling out a 48-39 girls basketball win at Central City Dec. 22.

     Taya Tucker scored 20 points, and Emerson Whittenbaugh had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, including six offensive board. Ella Imler had 13 points and five steals. Kylie Chesnut had eight rebounds.

     MV (5-0, 7-0) led 29-22 at halftime, and outscored Central City 19-17 in the second half.


Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley picked up a pair of boys basketball wins last week to move above the .500 mark before heading into the holiday break.

     The Wildcats (3-2, 5-3), pulled out a 51-48, double overtime victory over non-conference opponent Clayton Ridge Dec. 21 in Delhi. The teams finished regulation time tied 40-40, were tied again after the first overtime period 44-44, and MV outscored the Eagles 7-4 in the second overtime period.

     Andrew Holtz scored nearly half of the Wildcats’ points, 25, and had six rebounds and three assists. Avery Holtz added 10 points and had three steals. A.J. Ambundo had five points and three steals.

     At Central City Dec. 22, MV jumped to leads of 17-4 after one quarter and 32-13 at halftime, on the way to a 56-25 win. Statistics from the Central City game were unavailable at press time.
