'Cats rally past Springville

Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley rallied from a 31-23 halftime deficit to score a 57-53 win Jan. 16 at home against Springville.

     Three Wildcats scored in double figures: Tyson Tucker with 16 points, Trevor Elgin with 12 and Brian Heims with 10. Heath Gibbs had eight rebounds, Elgin had seven, and Tucker had six. Andrew Holtz had six assists, and Cole Willenbring had four steals.

     Maquoketa Valley is 4-10 in the Tri-Rivers Conference, 4-11 overall.

 

Girls basketball

     Maquoketa Valley picked up two more wins in recent Tri-Rivers Conference girls basketball action.

     The Wildcats (12-2, 14-2) overwhelmed Cedar Valley Christian 83-42 on Jan. 9, in a game played at Springville. Sam Wall scored 22 points and made 10 assists for a double-double. Gracie Gellersen had 18 points, while Maddy Anderegg and Emerson Whittenbaugh had 12 points apiece. Whittenbaugh also had five rebounds and four steals. Macy Hoeger scored eight points and made three steals.

     At home against Bellevue Marquette Jan. 12, MV survived a late rally to win 49-42. The Wildcats built a 35-23 lead through three quarters. Wall had 13 points and five assists. Payton Ries had 10 poitns and eight rebounds, while Hoeger also grabbed eight rebounds. Maci Freiburger had seven points and three steals.

 

Wrestling

     Maquoketa Valley hosted three teams in a quadrangular wrestling meet Jan. 18, winning one of three duals.

     The Wildcats lost to East Buchanan 35-33, defeated Edgewood-Colesburg 40-33, and lost to Lisbon 56-15.

     Michael Feldman (285 pounds) won all three of his matches for MV, one by pin and two by decision. Parker Sternhagen (120) went 2-1 with two pins. Also going 2-1, with one pin apiece, were Chance Downs at 145 and Mitch Smith at 160.

     “I thought we looked much better than we did at the end of (the previous) week,” Maquoketa Valley coach Tim Andrews said. “The guys were moving better, and I thought our overall technique and positioning were better.”
