Maquoketa Valley experienced both the high and the low of postseason play during a pair of district baseball games last week.

The Wildcats opened the Class 1A, District 7 tournament with an 8-0 romp over Edgewood-Colesburg July 11 in Troy Mills.

MV scored four runs in the top of the first inning, and gradually pulled away.

Alec McDowell was the starting pitcher for the ‘Cats, working 6 1/3 innings and allowing no runs on three hits. He struck out 11 and walked two.

Trevor Elgin pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, recording two strikeouts.

Maquoketa Valley totaled 14 hits, including five doubles. Elgin was 3-for-4 with a double. Tyson Tucker was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Norm Wilson was 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Zak Harbach went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Clint Krapfl and McDowell also batted 2-for-4.

The Wildcats’ season came to an end on July 13, however, when they lost a 2-0 decision to top-ranked North Linn at Troy Mills.

Tucker pitched a three-hitter against the Lynx, but came out on the short end, as North Linn scored single runs in the third and fifth innings. The Wildcats got a runner to third base three times during the game, but were unable to bring a run across.

MV got four hits against Lynx pitcher Jake Hilmer, including a double by Elgin.

Maquoketa Valley finished the season with a record of 18-14, including 13-9 in the Tri-Rivers Conference under coach Eric Conner.
