'Cats shine at Ed-Co, North Cedar

Wrestling

     A winning record in a quadrangular meet and a top-half finish in a tournament made up Maquoketa Valley’s wrestling results last week.

     The Wildcats traveled to Edgewood-Colesburg for a quadrangular meet Dec. 9, and won two out of three duals. MV defeated Clayton Ridge 54-17, and Ed-Co 45-24, and lost to Starmont 42-30.

     Kobe Peter and Michael Schaul each won two matches by fall. Salow won by a fall and a decision. Brenden Frasher and Tyreese Crippen each had a fall victory as well. Several Wildcats won by forfeit throughout the evening.

     Maquoketa Valley then scored 94 points to take sixth place out of 14 teams at the North Cedar Invitational Dec. 11. Solon won the tournament with 207.5, New London was second with 138, and Belle Plaine took third with 119.

     Brady Davis was champion at 220 pounds, winning all three of his matches by fall. Michael Schaul placed second at 152. Nathan Beitz finished third at 195. Taking fourth were Brenden Frasher, Aiden Salow and Devin Smith.

 

Girls basketball

     Maquoketa Valley knocked off a pair of Tri-Rivers Conference girls basketball opponents last week to remain undefeated in TRC play.

     The Wildcats (4-0, 5-2) played host to Easton Valley Dec. 7, and scored a 54-20 victory. MV jumped to a 28-11 lead by halftime, and outscored the RiverHawks 17-3 in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Caelyn Sands came off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 12 points. Kennedy Rausch and Bianka Ronnebaum each had four assists and four steals.

     MV then scored a 49-22 home victory over Lisbon Dec. 11, outscoring the Lions in each of the four quarters. The Wildcats led 23-6 at halftime. MV had a balanced scoring attack, as Bianka Ronnebaum and Sands each scored nine points, Carissa Sabers had eight, Rausch and Kylie Chesnut had six apiece, and Haley Ronnebaum and Erin Knipper had four each. Sabers had seven rebounds, and Chesnut had six. Sabers also had seven steals, while Bianka Ronnebaum had five steals and four assists.

 

Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley faced three boys basketball opponents in the space of six days last week, winning one of the games.

     The Wildcats (3-2) traveled to Central Elkader Dec. 6, and earned a 46-26 victory. The Wildcats led 25-18 at halftime, and outscored CE 21-8 in the second half. Avery Holtz led the way with 12 points, seven assists and five steals. Brock Trenkamp had a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Landen Deutmeyer and Kody Hoeger added eight points apiece.

     On Dec. 7, the Wildcats played host to Easton Valley, and lost 62-30. Holtz scored 12 points for MV, and Lance McShane grabbed five rebounds.

     That was followed by a 59-37 home loss to Lisbon Dec. 11. The Lions’ big first half was the difference; Lisbon led 32-12 at the break. Holtz had 13 points, four rebounds and two assists in that contest. Hoeger came off the bench to total eight points and five rebounds. Scoring four points each were Noah DeVore and Trenkamp.
