'Cats win twice in TRC action

Volleyball

     Two wins in Tri-Rivers Conference matches made it a good week for the Maquoketa Valley High School volleyball team.

     The Wildcats (2-0, 8-10) played host to Alburnett Sept. 19, and swept the Pirates by scores of 25-20, 25-17, 25-15. Macy Hoeger had 24 of the team’s 72 digs in the match, while Emerson Whittenbaugh had 16 and Payton Ries had 12. Ries led the team in kills with eight, and Whittenbaugh had six. Abby Holtz made 10 assists; Maddy Anderegg had eight. Serving 100 percent were Holtz (16-for-16), Ries (14-for-14) and Macy Hoeger (10-for-10). Maci Freiburger served five aces.

     On Sept. 21, MV scored another TRC win, this time at North Linn, by scores of 25-14, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21. The Wildcats combined for 54 kills, led by Freiburger with 19, Macy Hoeger and Ries with 10 each, and Whittenbaugh with nine. Holtz had 26 assists, and Anderegg had 11. Holtz had 21 digs, and Whittenbaugh had 20. Holtz also served 23-for-23.

 

Cross country

     Maquoketa Valley’s boys ran third in the nine-team Mustang Invitational cross country meet Sept. 23 at Independence. South Winneshiek won the meet with 35 points, West Delaware was second with 77 and MV scored 81.

     Chance Downs led the Wildcats, finishing fifth overall in 17:43. Brenden Hogan was ninth in 17:57, Derek Mensen 13th in 18:27, Mason Lubben 26th in 19:27, Daniel Hunter 28th in 19:33, Tate Trenkamp 29th in 19:38, and Jon Seibert 30th in 19:48.

     The Wildcats had no girls in the varsity races.
