There were ups and downs for the Monticello High School wrestling team in a double dual at Maquoketa Valley Jan. 8, but there was one high point that stood above the others: junior Chase Luensman’s 100th career victory.

Luensman achieved the milestone in his match against Anamosa, scoring a pin and then holding up his arms in celebration as a large Monticello fan section cheered.

“This is a great milestone for Chase, and shows his consistency of winning, due to the fact he missed a lot of last season due to a broken foot,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “Chase is on pace to become the winningest wrestler in Monticello’s history. It will be fun to see how the rest of his career progresses.”

Monticello split its two matches Monday, beating Anamosa 48-36 and losing to Maquoketa Valley 45-36.

“We started off strong against Anamosa, but we ended up losing Spencer Avery to an illegal slam,” coach Luensman said. “That played a factor in the next dual against MV. That dual was ours to win or lose, and we just didn’t get it done. We had some good individual performances, but we didn’t put the complete team effort out there that we had been seeing throughout the season.”

Ethan Tallman, Chase Luensman and Lake Stahlberg each scored two pins. Also going 2-0, with a pin and a forfeit, were Alaina Sunlin and Kain Luensman. Thomas Broderick and Gavin Holub recorded pins against Anamosa.

“Lake Stahlberg is getting stronger every time he wrestles,” the coach said. “It is great to see him back on the mat.”

Monticello was back on the mat Saturday at the Loyd Shaffer Invitational in Marion. Kain Luensman won the championship at 113 pounds, while Chase Luensman (132) and Stahlberg (220) were second. Gavin Holub was fifth at 182.

“That was the toughest tournament of the year so far,” coach Luensman said. “Kain had a great tournament, picking up wins over the No. 10 and No. 3-ranked wrestlers in the state. Chase looked solid, but did struggle in the finals. He needs to stick with what he does and does well.

“Lake did a great job of staying in position and taking advantage of opportunities. Gavin had a good day. He is a lot tougher than he gives himself credit for.”

JV tournament

The Panthers sent seven wrestlers to a junior varsity tournament at Western Dubuque Jan. 12. Thomas Broderick was a champion at 152 pounds, and Andrew Wall finished third at 120.
