Monticello wrapped up its challenging cross country season with its annual awards event Monday, Nov. 9 in the Monticello High School Commons.

It was a season that included unique challenges, including occasional interruptions for individuals due to COVID-19, and the fact Monticello had been bumped up to Class 3A for this season after spending decades in 2A.

Despite that, the Panther boys won the River Valley Conference (RVC) championship, and the girls finished third.

Neither team advanced to state; the girls were fourth and the boys fifth in their respective state qualifying races. But two Panthers – junior Carter Kurt and sophomore Emma Althoff, represented the Panthers individually at State.

“It was a very difficult year, Monticello coach Dan Sauser said at the event. “It was just hard to get consistency in our training. There was always a curveball that seemed to be thrown at us.

“But through it all, they really persevered and worked extremely hard, so I could not be more proud of this team. I think they had as much adversity as any team I’ve ever had, and they really came together at the end, and we had a special end to the season.”

A list of Panther cross country awards follows.
