Childcare Provider Appreciation Day, May 11

     Cedar/Jones Early Childhood Iowa would like to recognize childcare providers in the area on Friday, May 11 as part of the national Child Care Provider Appreciation Day. They applaud their efforts and encourage the public to take some time to thank and appreciate the people in your life who commit their time and energy to the youngest citizens.

     This special day is intended to recognize all those who nurture, teach, and care for children in multiple settings across our counties. Childcare settings include school- and community-based preschools, Head Start programs, childcare centers, and homes.

     The communities, parents and policy makers are increasingly reminded of the importance of high-quality childcare. Over the past decade, Iowa has ranked in the top three states for children under age 6 whose parents are working. Childcare providers give parents peace of mind as they leave for work knowing their child is receiving nurturing, safe, and healthy care.

     The care a child receives during the first five years of life should be the highest quality, as 90 percent of brain development occurs during those years. Care also provided before and after school keeps children engaged in school, supports social development, increases physical activity, and reduces stress on families.

     Although Provider Appreciation Day is recognized every year in May on the Friday before Mother’s Day, it is important to show appreciation year-round for individuals who serve an important role in providing high-quality childcare. ECI knows that nurturing and responsive early care and education provides a solid foundation for children’s ongoing success. Research indicates that there is a direct link between caregiver training and quality of care, so to achieve a high quality of care, childcare providers must receive suitable training and compensation.
