Christiansen and Ballou take first at Tipton Invitational
Opening the season at the Tipton Invitational on Dec. 6, Wyatt Christiansen and Dane Ballou led the Midland boys wrestling team with a first-place finish at 190. The Eagles finished sixth in the 10-team tournament with 114.5 points.
Christiansen started the season 3-0, after a pair of pins and win via major decision to take first place at 165.
In a quarterfinal match against Tipton’s Kendrick Heffernan, Christiansen earned the pin in 3:36. The Midland senior pinned (1:49) Iowa City Liberty’s Charles Nicknish in the semifinal, before beating Tipton’s Max Lashmit via major decision (18-9) in the first-place match.
It was a 4-0 day for Ballou, who tallied three pins and a technical fall.
Ballou pinned Waverly-Shell Rock’s Alphonse Luecking in 29 seconds and North Scott’s Carson Ferguson in 3:34 to reach the semifinals. The Midland junior earned another pin in the semifinals, this one in 2:46 over North Scott’s Kade Kelly. Northeast’s Collin Burken was the opponent in the first-place match, but Ballou took care of business with a 20-3 technical fall win.
In a round-robin format at 120, Tristan Minor went 3-2 to take second place.
Minor dropped a 12-11 decision to Southeast Polk’s Jonathan Moe in round one and fell to Iowa City Liberty’s Everett Kahn in round two but bounced back to win his last three matches.
All three wins came by pin for Minor, as he took wins over Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Wyatt Plotz (3:01), Northeast’s Braxton Meyer (0:54) and North Scott’s Reese Morden (0:22).
Kinnick Moore went 1-2 in round-robin action at 106, after falling to Southeast Polk’s Keegan Scott in round one, Kruz Keller, of Waverly-Shell Rock, in round two and then beating Max Van Kley, of Waverly-Shell Rock, by forfeit in round three.
Nathan Rickels (132) and Wyatt King (215) each went 3-2 on the day to finish fourth Kameron Sagers went 2-3 to take sixth at 215.
Wyatt Tracy (138), Kolton Duffy (138), Tucker Barlow (157), Jesse King (175), Wyatt Schoenherr (175) and Raiden Cruise (285) also competed for the Eagles.
Southeast Polk topped the team standings with 172 points; Tipton was second with 150.5 and North Scott third with 135. Waverly-Shell Rock finished fourth (127.5), followed by Cedar Rapids Jefferson fifth (123.5), Midland sixth (114.5), Iowa City Liberty seventh (112), Northeast eighth (93.5), North Cedar ninth (73) and Quad Cities Christian 10th (24).
Zimmerman Invitational
In the 2025 Zimmerman Invitational on Dec. 13 at Maquoketa High School, the Eagles tied for 12th with 51 points in the 17-team event.
Ballou led the Eagles with another first-place finish, improving his record to 7-0 on the season.
After a first-round bye, Ballou pinned Wahlert’s Easton Lyons in 26 seconds. He followed up with a pin (3:15) over Clinton’s Damarius Robinson in the semifinals and another pin in the first-place match, this one over Davenport West’s Xavier Mendoza in 55 seconds.
King went 2-2 on the day, pinning Northeast’s Conrad Kroymann in 2:22 to take fifth. Christiansen went 1-3 to place sixth and pick up seven team points. Minor went 2-2 on the day, earning two pins to tally seven team points.
Iowa City, City High took first in the team standings with 265.5 points, leading Clinton in second with 220.5 points and Davenport North third with 185. Tipton finished fourth (125.5), followed by Fulton, Ill. Fifth (123), Davenport Central sixth (90), Maquoketa and North Scott JV seventh (82.5) and Davenport West ninth (65.5).
Camanche and Dubuque Hempstead JV tied for 10th (55.5), followed by Midland and Wahlert (51) in 12th, Northeast 14th (34), Iowa City Liberty 15th (28), Iowa City, City High JV 16th (21) and Fulton, Ill. JV 17th (0).
