City election nominations open

     Janine Sulzner, Jones County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections, announces that the nomination-filing period for mayor and city council began Monday, Aug. 28, in the office of the county auditor and runs until 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017. All nomination papers must be filed in the office of the county auditor at the courthouse in Anamosa. Due to recent legislation, city candidate nomination papers can no longer be filed with the respective city clerk.

     In the city of Monticello, the offices of mayor, council at-large, council ward 2, and council ward 4, are up for election. The signatures of at least 25 eligible electors of the city are required on nomination petitions for mayor and council-at-large. The signatures of at least 25 eligible electors of the respective ward are required on petitions for candidates for council wards 2 and 4. Candidates for ward seats must also live within the respective ward. The term of office for mayor is two years, and the council terms are four years.

     In the city of Anamosa the office of mayor and three at-large council seats are up for election. The signatures of at least 25 eligible electors of the city are required on nomination petitions for mayor and council. The term of office for mayor is two years, and the council terms are four years each.

     In the cities of Olin and Onslow, the office of mayor and two council at-large seats are up for election. The term of office for mayor in these cities is two years, and the council at-large terms are four years each. In addition there is a council at-large vacancy in the city of Olin for the two remaining years in the term. Signatures of at least 10 eligible electors of the respective city are required on nomination petitions.

     In the cities of Oxford Junction and Wyoming, the office of mayor and three council at-large seats are up for election. The term of office for mayor in these cities is two years, and the council at-large terms are four years each. Signatures of at least 10 eligible electors of the respective city are required on nomination petitions.

     In the city of Martelle, two council at-large seats are up for election for four-year terms. Signatures of at least 10 eligible electors of the city of Martelle are required on nomination petitions. The office of mayor is a four-year term and is not on the ballot in 2017.

     In the city of Morley, the office of mayor and five council at-large seats are up for election for two-year terms. Signatures of at least 10 eligible electors of the city of Morley are required on nomination petitions.

     Nomination packets are available in the office of the city clerk, the Jones County Auditor’s Office, and are also available from the County Auditor’s web page on the Jones County website www.jonescountyiowa.org.

     The city elections are on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017.
