July 12-18, 2020 is the inaugural Iowa’s Ride, a weeklong bike ride across the State of Iowa. This alternative to RAGBRAI will maintain a northern route, starting in Eastern Iowa, heading west.

And the City of Monticello is showing interest in hosting the riders in some fashion.

During the Nov. 18 Monticello City Council Meeting, Mayor Brian Wolken said they are looking into the possibility of welcoming the first annual Iowa’s Ride to Monticello.

“We’re looking for interest from the community to host,” said Wolken.

Previously Wolken expressed interest in hosting RAGBRAI, which runs July 19-25; however, the Great Jones County Fair takes place July 22-26, 2020.

Wolken explained Iowa’s Ride is a smaller event compared to RAGBRAI, topping out at around 5,000 versus 25,000 or more.

“We’re exploring things, and want our organizations on board,” added Wolken.

“A smaller amount of people is more accommodating,” said Council member Chris Lux. “This is a possible fit for us.”

In other city business:

• The council approved the FY 2021 TIF certification in the amount of $600,000.

• The council approved the use of TIF funds in the amount of $9,776.66 to PEM for bond counsel related to the N. Sycamore Street Reconstruction Project. The remaining 40 percent will be paid out of the city’s Debt Service Fund.
