Several departments provided updates to the Monticello City Council during their Aug. 2 meeting.

City Administrator Russ Farnum reported that he is working with Jones County Senior Dining regarding possible use of the Monticello Community Building.

“It’s not without its challenges,” he said.

For one, Moser School of Dance and Gymnastics uses the building every Wednesday afternoon and evening. This means the parking lot quickly fills up with parents and guardians dropping kids off and picking them up.

The Community Building is also used by the Monticello Public Library throughout the year, especially during the summer for Summer Reading Program events. The parking lot is also used by library staff and patrons throughout the days and weeks.

“It’d be a great space to use from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., expect on Wednesdays,” said Farnum.

Public Works Director Nick Kahler reported that the driveway at Oakwood Cemetery was being paved last week, and should be finished within the next couple of weeks.

Water/Wastewater Superintendent Jim Tajden shared some positive news regarding his department and staff… As of last week, all three of the Water/ Wastewater staff were certified as Grade 3 operators.

“Not too many towns can say that,” praised Tjaden. “It’s pretty significant.”

The Parks and Recreation Duck Drop event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Kitty Creek Bridge on Highway 38.

Parks and Rec Director Jacob Oswald said they’ve sold a little over 100 tickets, with a goal of selling 1,000. Tickets are available at local businesses, City Hall, the Berndes Center, and more.

Michelle Turnis, library director, informed the council that the story walk on Willow Trail was once again vandalized and thrown into Kitty Creek. The library and Parks and Rec decided to pull the remaining signs for the season until enough money can be raised to install permanent structures along the trail.
