Clayton Ridge outlasts Wildcats in regional

SOFTBALL

Clayton Ridge and Maquoketa Valley combined for 33 runs on 26 hits, but MV came up on the short end in the first round of the Class 2A regional softball playoffs, losing 19-14 to Clayton Ridge July 2 in Delhi.

The teams traded leads throughout the game. Maquoketa Valley led 7-2 through three innings, before the Eagles scored eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 10-7 lead.

The Wildcats came back with two in the fifth and five in the sixth to lead 14-10, but again Clayton Ridge answered, this time with nine runs in the top of the seventh.

For MV, Maddy Anderegg batted 4-for-4 with a double. Taya Tucker was 3-for-4, and Cassie Westhoff went 2-for-5 with a double.

Allie Knipper and Rylie Aldrich shared pitching duties.

Maquoketa Valley finished the season eighth in the Tri-Rivers Conference with a 9-13 record, and was 11-25 overall.

“As a whole, I think this season was a learning experience for both the coaching staff and the girls,” MV coach Kendra Whitman said. “The girls had to learn how to adapt to a new coach and coaching style, as well as adapting to not having any returning varsity pitchers.

“I feel that the offensive part of the game went well for the most part. We had four girls finish the season above .300 (in batting average).

“Things I am looking to improve upon for next year include base running, lock-down defense, and consistency in the circle.”

Whitman said season highlights included getting two wins against Bellevue Marquette, which included a grand slam for Tucker and a solo home run for Maddie Lahr, both firsts; and a win over Midland in a game that lasted more than three hours.
