THE NATURE OF THINGS COLUMN

The season of giving is upon us! If you are looking for a different kind of gift to give, consider giving a gift to future generations by supporting the “Central Park Lake Restoration Project.”

Central Park Lake is in the midst of a major renovation. Built in 1965, Central Park Lake has been the recreational focus for Jones County residents and visitors for over 50 years. With planned renovations and improvements, Central Park Lake will be a centerpiece of recreation for generations to come.

Central Park Lake’s renovation plan includes dredging and removal of 125,000 cubic yards of sediment and nutrients from the lakebed beginning in 2017. This past fall, as the lake was drawn down in anticipation of dredging, water levels in the lake slowly receded exposing 50 years of accumulated sediment and debris.

Shoreline reshaping, armoring, fish habitat restoration and access improvements will follow dredging in 2017-2018. Trees, culvert hides, pallet structures, stake beds and a variety of other innovative structures will be added. This will provide wonderful opportunities for youth and community groups to help construct and install new fish habitat components for the lake.

Access improvement projects in need of funding and donations include a new ADA accessible fishing access and pier; improved access sidewalks to the beach, rental equipment and picnic areas; and replacement of the boat ramp, dock and parking area to increase parking space and safety for lake users.

Every donor involved in the Central Park Lake Restoration Project will be recognized through the Jones County Conservation website, newsletter, and grand opening event. Donors giving $500 or more can choose to be included on a donor appreciation kiosk near the lake’s edge. Those donating $75,000 and above have the privilege of choosing the name for the beach, fishing access, or boat ramp/paddling access. Gifts in honor or in memory of loved ones are also welcome.
