COLUMN: If not Packers, then who?

OFF THE MARK COLUMN

Here is a football dilemma. Well, it’s not really a dilemma but something for this Packer fan to ponder. If the Packers do not make the playoffs, and it’s sure seems like they are trending that way, despite beating the Cowboys on Sunday, who should I cheer on?

Let’s be honest, us Packer fans have been spoiled for many years. The last time Green Bay missed the playoffs was back-to-back seasons in 2017-2018. Prior to that was 2008. Since 1993, Green Bay has been in the playoffs every year but six times. Interestingly enough, of those six, all three were back-to-back seasons.

I’d like to pick a team to cheer on just in case Green Bay doesn’t mount a huge comeback this season. In the NFC I wouldn’t mind seeing the Eagles win or the 49ers. In the AFC I could also see myself cheering on the Dolphins or Jets.

But I’m going to surprise a few of you. If Green Bay does in fact miss out on the playoffs this season, I am going to pull for their division rival Minnesota Vikings to go all the way and finally win the big one.

Normally I wouldn’t cheer on a division rival but Pete Temple is a big Viking fan. Dan Goodyear is a big Viking fan. Can you imagine how nice work will be if both of those guys are riding on cloud nine? To be fair, both of those guys are always in pretty good moods at the Express office.

And another reason for picking the Vikes, they deserve a Super Bowl. There are a lot of Viking fans around these parts and they suffered a long time, kind of like us Cub fans did prior to 2016.

Hopefully this is all a moot point and Green Bay uses the Cowboy victory to propel themselves into a long winning streak.

Speaking of the Cowboys, when the Packers fired former coach Mike McCarthy, I am pretty sure I wrote how happy I was with this decision in this column. After watching Sunday’s game, I must concur, I still feel the same way.

Watching McCarthy cry all night to the men in stripes and slamming his headphones down in disgust was perfect Mike McCarthy actions. Some things never change, except the rare event of the Packers missing out on the 2022 playoffs.
