With the college football playoff championship game left to play (which is tonight as I write this), I have officially won the Express bowl challenge over my counterpart, Pete. That earned myself a $1 and a two-year winning streak.

To top that all off, it was great to see my Hawkeyes win a thrilling game over Mississippi State. I did not get to see the Cyclones play but from what I hear, there were some questionable calls by the refs that game.

I never heard if that factored into the final outcome but it’s too bad when the refs become more of the game than the game itself.

The Hawkeyes came out of their win without yielding a penalty, which is a rarity in sports, and MSU had quite a few costly ones that did factor into the game. I do think it’s safe to say those penalties were correctly called.

Bowl season is still filled with way too many games in my opinion. Tonight’s game should be fun to watch and even though I choose Alabama for the win, I am hoping Clemson emerges as the winner.

Speaking of my Hawks, this past week was a mixed bag of games. They got trounced by Purdue but emerged victorious over the Cornhuskers. I’m guessing each week will be like that from here on out.

Who really knows how good these Hawkeyes can be? I’m sticking to my thoughts that until they get more athletic recruits, it will be hard to compete for Big Ten titles and NCAA invites.

Across the state, the Cyclones seem to be improving on the hardwood with a great win over the Kansas Jayhawks.

I better mention the UNI Panthers here so I keep my oldest daughter happy. The Panthers’ young team is struggling to win games and I actually wish that were the opposite. I’ve enjoyed their recent success and having UNI competitive is the best thing for the state.

Of course, that’s not going to stop me from continuing to brainwash my grandson Sullivan with continued chants of “Go Hawks!”
