Conference wins keep MV unbeaten in TRC



     Maquoketa Valley remained unbeaten in Tri-Rivers Conference play, and evened its overall record, with a pair of conference wins last week.

     The Wildcats (4-0, 10-10) pulled out a five-set win over Edgewood-Colesburg Tuesday, Sept. 26, with four of the five sets decided by four or fewer points. The set scores, with MV’s scores first, were 27-25, 25-15, 21-25, 22-25, 16-14.

     MV totaled 55 kills, led by four Wildcats in double figures: Maci Freiburger and Payton Ries with 12 apiece, Macy Hoeger with 11, and Emerson Whittenbaugh with 10. Abby Holtz had 28 assists, and Maddy Anderegg had 15.

     The team also had 128 digs, led by Freiburger and Whittenbaugh with 26 apiece, Holtz with 14 and Madison Imler with 13. Ries had four blocks, while Macy Hoeger and Olivia Hoeger had two each. Freiburger served four aces. Holtz also served 26-for-26.

     On Sept. 28, MV played at Central City, and recorded a sweep, by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 25-12. The team’s balanced attack included nine kills from Ries, eight from Freiburger and seven from Macy Hoeger. Holtz had 18 assists.

     Maquoketa Valley had 70 digs, with Macy Hoeger totaling 15, and Freiburger, Holtz and Whittenbaugh getting 11 apiece. Ries served 21-for-21 with four aces, Holtz was 17-for-17, and Freiburger was 13-for-14 with four aces.



     The Wildcats split a pair of recent Class 1A, District 3 football games.

     On Sept. 15, MV (2-1, 4-1) suffered its first loss of the season, but played a competitive game with highly-regarded West Branch before falling 39-21 in Delhi.

     Tyson Tucker completed 11 of 22 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns. Brock Hillers had five catches for 90 yards and a touchdown, while Norman Wilson had four catches for 81 yards and a score. Tucker also had a three-yard touchdown run.

     Tackle leaders included Michael Feldmann with six, Robert Hildebrand and Wilson with 5.5 apiece, and Trent Koopman with five.

     At Tipton Sept. 22, the Wildcats scored a 35-16 victory. It was another big game for Tucker, who rushed for two touchdowns and passed for two more. He completed six of 11 passes for 126 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown pass to Wilson. Hillers caught a 19-yard scoring pass. Rushing leaders were Mitch Smith with 11 carries for 85 yards, Garrett Hogan with 15 carries for 83 yards, and Tucker with 10 carries for 64 yards. Derek Becker also had a rushing touchdown.

     Matthew Hucker and Andy O’Connell recovered Tipton fumbles. Leading tacklers were Wilson with nine, Hogan with 8.5, Cole Kruse with 6.5, and Becker with five.


Cross country

     Maquoketa Valley took seventh place in a large field of 22 boys cross country teams at the Jesup Invitational Sept. 26.

     The Wildcats were led by Chance Downs, who finished 14th overall in 17:22. Brenden Hogan was 25th in 17:41, Tate Trenkamp 42nd in 18:04, Mason Lubben 63rd in 18:38, and Jon Seibert 92nd in 19:40.
